Larklife

The first time I launched the Larklife iPhone app, I thought, "How can an app this well designed and different from the competition go with a gadget that's so clunky and awkward?" Larklife ($149.99, direct) is just one of many fitness-tracking gadgets vying for the attention of consumers who want to be motivated to get moving. And the app could do just that, provided you have an iPhone, because it really does work differently from all the other personal health and wellness programs you'll find. But the wristband that goes with it doesn't compare to the more slender and sophisticated models you'll find in big brand names like Nike and Jawbone. Due to Larklife's lackluster form factor and slightly high price, it sits somewhere in the middle of the fitness gadget pack. It's not bad, but not great, and for less money you can probably find something you'll like better.

For me, the answer is the $100 Fitbit One, our Editors' Choice and one of only a few fitness gadgets that isn't a bracelet, making it easier to conceal when you don't want your friends or a hot date to know you're monitoring your physical activity. The Fitbit costs less than most other devices, works with both a Web app and smartphone app, and connects with a host of other personal health apps and devices.?

More similar to Larkflife are the Nike+ FuelBand and the Jawbone UP. The Jawbone UP fits the most comfortably of the three, although the Nike+ FuelBand at least puts visual data, like the time and your total activity for the day, right on the bracelet itself?neither Larklife nor Jawbone UP do. If I'm going to wear a gadget 24/7, I'd at least like it to tell me the time.

Design
Though a bracelet, Larklife disassembles in a way that I've never seen before in a fitness tracker. Its core component is a small piece of plastic with a strip of LED lights and a single button on the side. That core piece snaps into a plastic bracelet or "day band," as well as a separate and more flexible strap for overnight use to track your sleep. The USB rechargeable battery isn't in the core piece but rather in each band.

The lights serve a couple of purposes, like flashing to remind you to be active or to indicate a function. For example, press the button twice to automatically log when you eat a meal so you don't have to take out your smartphone to record everything you eat during dinner. You can add specifics later, or not.

In wearing Larklife for several days, I got used to it the same way I got used to wearing a wristwatch. I removed it to type and to slide my arms into a fitted jacket. But I didn't like that the blue bracelet called attention to itself. Fitbit One, on the other hand, hides discreetly out of sight on a waistband, bra strap, or even in a pocket (the thing is tiny), giving you more control over who knows you're wearing one.

The Jawbone UP is much smaller and sleeker than Larklife, but in other ways they're extremely similar. Each is designed to be worn on the wrist and only sync via an iOS device (not a computer), although Larklife syncs via Bluetooth whereas Jawbone UP connects via the headphone jack. Both the Jawbone UP and Larklife include silent alarms that vibrate to wake you, as does Fitbit One.

Larklife's Strength: A Simplified App
While the Larklife band may be clunky, its companion iPhone app, where you see all the data the device collects, is decidedly simplified. It has only four categories for logging data?meals, workout, boost, and sleep?and automates some of the recordkeeping for you. If you run or workout vigorously while wearing Larklife, the app automatically records that activity as a workout (although it once thought I worked out when all I did was scurry to catch a train). A "boost," the way the app describes it, could be anything that makes you feel refreshed, from taking a brisk walk or heading to the water cooler for some office gabbing. It can be whatever you want, and I like that Larklife includes it in its data collection. Decreasing stress should be seen as an integral part of wellness.

The band and app sync over Bluetooth, so you always have quick access to the data when your iPhone is nearby. I ended up flipping the Bluetooth off quite often, however, to conserve my phone's battery.

Most of the app display appears in portrait mode. Bubbles relating to each of the four logged activities (meal, workout, boost, sleep) fill up a screen for one day's activity. Drag your finger around the current day's screen, and the bubbles bounce and move around. Turn the phone horizontally, and your day's activity plot onto a bar graph that shows when you were active, total time active (in minutes), calories burned, distance traveled, and your sleep data.

What Larklife captures isn't remarkably different than other fitness gadgets and apps, except for the unique "boost" category, but it does simplify the process of recording. When you enter a meal, for example, the app doesn't ask you to search a massive database of foods for exactly what you've eaten, but rather offers a selection of basic food types?protein, vegetable, fruit, grain, and water?and has you tap the ones you've consumed. Again, the emphasis is more on wellness and thinking positively than getting into the nitty gritty of what you did wrong for the day, although not everyone will agree with this approach. I, for one, learn a lot when I count calories and pay close attention to exactly what I'm eating. I'd rather have a more detailed system than a general one. But it could be appealing for people who want to change their fitness and eating habits in a way that will actually stick.

Better Fitness Through Personal Data
Larklife is a good product but it competes with a few that are better and less expensive. The Fitbit One remains the clear Editors' Choice for its excellent form factor, top-notch data collection, and wonderful companion app for iPhone, Android, and the Web. It also integrates with a host of other apps and gadgets. When you can get all that for $99, Larklife just doesn't seem like it has much appeal.

What I learned about science blogging/writing this year

I experimented with topics, lengths, forms, and voices, quite a lot this year, trying this and that to see what works for me, what works with the readers, etc. This is what I learned:

I can still write a standard ResearchBlogging post of reasonable length, yet covering all the context it needs.

And I can post it at the time embargo lifts. And I can get quite nice traffic for it:

How barley domesticated its clock

I can blog a conference, even if the topic is not my narrowest area of expertise.

I wanted to learn how to cover a meeting like a journalistic pro. Instead, Editor-in-Chief told me ?No, you should blog it?. So I did. And I had fun, I added my own photos, and people in the field liked it:

#2012SVP ? what do Vertebrate Paleontologists talk about?

I can get outside of my area of expertise when the news cycle requires it, learn about it fast, and become a temporary expert on it.

And then get interviewed and quoted by the other new outlets as if I really am an expert on the topic:

Did NYC rats survive hurricane Sandy?

But my personalized follow-up on the Big News story, does not work as well as the original.

But heck, at least I finally got to publish some old photos:

No rats in Ryder Alley

I can write on deadline, with word-limit, and I like getting my stuff edited.

When all the editors started nominating stories for our Top Ten 2012 Stories list, I suggested ENCODE, so I was assigned to write about it. I was worried about having to re-write everything from scratch, so I turned it in two days ahead of deadline. When I got the piece back, edited by Phil Yam, it looked very, very red on my screen. But as I started checking all the edits, I realized that each edit was small ? a punctuation here, a word-order there, a small change in wording, etc. No huge changes, but LOTS of tiny changes. And each little thing made my article a little bit better. All the changes together made my article much better. So I am quite happy how it turned out:

Publication of the ENCODE Encyclopedia: A Milestone in Genome Research

Long posts with strange structure can work well.

I experimented with coverage of several papers in a single post. I covered each one briefly, had subheadings (e.g., What is it about, What is new, Take-home message, Some more thoughts, Good coverage elsewhere, etc), finishing with my own summary of how all of the papers fit together, how they move the field as a whole forward. And it got quite decent traffic:

Clocks, metabolism, evolution ? toward an integrative chronobiology

I can write fast, publish as embargo lifts, and STILL manage to get a lot of context and lot of my own thoughts.

It helps that I have written, few years before, a very involved post on a related topic, so I could draw from that pool of information, build up on it. Many people told me they really loved this post:

Stumped by bed nets, mosquitoes turn midnight snack into breakfast

Totally quirky stuff has its own fans.

It started with a bet that I could seriously use the word ?callipygous? in a science article. That led me on a search for topics in which I could potentially use it. That brought me to spiders (yes, it could have been sheep instead). So I wrote a completely stream-of-consciousness post connecting all sorts of seemingly unconnected things about spiders. I wrote about spiders before. I talked about spiders very recently. I saw the Spider exhibit at the AMNH just before it. I included bits and pieces of all of that somewhere in the post. And I timed the post to show up on the anniversary of ?Charlotte?s Web?. All of that combined into a quirky post with surprising twists and turns, cool scientific information, fun videos, personal stuff, and more. And people just loved it:

Charlotte?s Web: what was she smoking?

I can write REALLY fast! And lack of time for over-thinking makes it better.

I heard about the study at 8am. I published my post at 11am. While multitasking other stuff I had to do at the time. Yes, I carefully read the paper first. And the paper got lots of media coverage elsewhere, yet the author contacted me to tell me specifically how well I did it. And the PIO in charge of the paper bought me a beer a few months later for giving the paper so much visibility and good coverage. And the post even resulted in a comic strip, the original of which is now hanging on the wall of the institution where the research was done. My favorite post of the entire year:

Tigers take to the night ? for peaceful coexistence with humans

Next year, I?ll try some new approaches, do new experiments, try to make it fun for me and you. We?ll see how it works out in the end?.

Researchers from the University of Vigo, in collaboration with the Environmental Services Unit at the Alejandro de Humboldt National Park (Cuba), have discovered two new species of Caribbean orchid.

The Caribbean islands have been natural laboratories and a source of inspiration for biologists for over two centuries now. Suffice to say that the studies by Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace in the tropical archipelagos contributed to the emergence of the theory of evolution.

In this case, a Spanish research team from the University of Vigo has discovered two new species belonging to the orchid family (Orchidaceae: Laeliinae) in Cuba. They have been called Tetramicra riparia and Encyclia navarroi. The two plants were found in the eastern and western zones of the island respectively.

"The first species described, Encyclia navarroi, is an orchid with considerably large flowers. A year later we discovered the Tetramicra riparia species, with very small flowers. The latter is so named because it grows on the banks of stony streams in the mountains of Baracoa, one of the rainiest and least explored areas in Cuba", as ngel Vale explained to SINC. Vale is a researcher at the University of Vigo and co-author of the studies published by the journals Systematic Botany and Annales Botanici Fennici.

Darwin was very much drawn to the orchid family, and used it to propose certain hypotheses about the importance of the relations between flowers and pollinators for biodiversity. Between 25,000 and 30,000 species of these plants are estimated to exist. However, the mechanisms that explain this amazing variety are only now being discovered.

"We could highlight their extraordinary capacity to interact with different types of pollinators. Contrary to most plants, many orchids do not produce nectar or other substances to compensate insects and birds that visit them", explained the researcher.

Orchids' deceit pollination

Despite this, floral visitors are attracted by orchids' colours and shapes, which enables the plants' sexual reproduction. This is known as deceit pollination.

The University of Vigo Plant Ecology and Evolution research team, which Vale belongs to, is studying the ecological and evolutionary consequences of deceit pollination in orchids that are endemic to the Greater Antilles: Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola and Puerto Rico. One of the mysteries they aim to solve is if the deceit orchids have a greater taxonomic and genetic diversity than other nectar-producing species.

Vale and his team are drawing up studies in the Antilles not only to reconstruct the evolutionary history of orchids but also to analyse the effect of pollinators in the reproduction of plants, and how this interaction has modelled the colourful aspect of these Caribbean flowers.

"Despite the fact that T. riparia's flowers have a complete central petal, just like other species that make up a subgenre endemic to Cuba; the way they grow is very similar to a more widespread group that seems to have diverged on the neighbouring island of Hispaniola. Our work provides molecular evidence of the greater relationship of T. riparia with these species on the neighbouring island. This is in consonance with the geological history of the Caribbean islands, according to which the eastern end of Cuba was in close contact with that land", pointed out Vale.

Scientists are currently trying to estimate how many millions of years ago this and other Caribbean species saw the light of day. This will enable them to test whether the ancestor of this species was already in Cuba, or if on the contrary, it evolved from an ancestor that colonised the island from neighbouring archipelagos.

"Just as with most orchids, which offer no compensation to their pollinators, Encyclia navarroi and Tetramicra riparia receive very few visits from bees. This is one of the basic reasons that guarantee the survival of these plants, and also help protect the populations of their pollinators", explained the scientist.

Commercial real estate delinquency dips | RedlionTrader

is an aerial view of Downtown Albuquerque. The local market did not see overbuilding during the boom that has led to a high proportion of distressed properties in many larger metros. (journal file)

Delinquency rates for commercial real estate loans continued an overall modest decline in the third quarter, although the sector continues to feel the drag of sluggish economic growth, high unemployment and anticipated tax increases.

The 90-plus-day delinquency rate for loans held nationwide by FDIC-insured banks and other financial institutions was 2.9 percent in July-September, down from 3.8 percent a year earlier, according to the latest commercial mortgage delinquency report from the Mortgage Bankers Association.

Commercial mortgages tend to have the lowest charge-off rates of any major loan type held by banks, the report notes. The delinquency data for banks does not include loans backed by owner-occupied commercial properties, which typically have different underwriting criteria.

?Banks hold the majority of real estate loans in the U.S.? said Peter Gineris, head of debt and equity finance at the Albuquerque office of CBRE, a commercial real estate services firm. ?They are very conservative in their lending today, but have traditionally been the most accessible lenders.?

Commercial mortgage-backed securities, or CMBS, have only been around for about 15 years and became a popular financing tool during the robust deal-making years of 2004-08.

These loans originate with banks, most commonly big ones like Citibank and Goldman Sachs, then are bundled together and sold as investment securities on Wall Street. Once the securities are sold, the original banks get paid and are out of the deal, Gineris explained.

The 30-plus-day delinquency rate for loans held nationwide in CMBS was 8.9 percent in July-September, essentially the same as it was a year earlier. For comparison, the 30-plus-day delinquency rate for home loans was 7.6 percent during the same period, the Mortgage Bankers Association reported.

The CMBS delinquency rate for loans in the Albuquerque metro area has been a little lower than the national average, primarily because it?s a smaller market, Gineris said.

?The CMBS lenders have been a bit less aggressive when lending in Albuquerque than they have been in the major metro markets and ?24-hour? cities,? he said.

CMBS loans here have tended to be a little more conservative, with more of a cushion against declines in value and net income, he said. In addition, the local market did not see ?significant overbuilding? during the boom that has led to a high proportion of distressed properties in many larger metros.

The 60-plus-day delinquency rate was 0.1 percent in the third quarter, down from 0.2 percent a year earlier, for commercial mortgages in investment portfolios held by life insurance companies, major lenders in the commercial real estate market.

The money that life insurance companies put into real estate loans will one day be needed to pay insurance claims, thus the companies are conservative in how they lend, Gineris said. They typically lend to the cream of the crop, such as buyers with top credit purchasing higher-quality properties.

?All this leads to a lower delinquency rate for life (insurance) company lenders,? he said.

What constitutes a delinquent loan varies among the lending groups, such as 90-plus days for banks, 30-plus days for CMBS and 60-plus days for life insurance companies. As a result, the association?s report notes that ?delinquency rates are not comparable from one group to another.?

In addition to the private capital sources, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are the biggest players in loans for multifamily or apartment properties.

The 60-plus-day delinquency rate for loans held or guaranteed by Fannie Mae was 0.3 percent in the third quarter, down from 0.6 percent a year earlier. The 60-plus-day delinquency rate for loans held or guaranteed by Freddie Mac was 0.3 percent in the third quarter, essentially unchanged from a year earlier.

The low GSE delinquency rates stem largely from apartments being the strongest overall commercial property type in the country right now, Gineris said.

Altogether, the five lending groups ? banks, CMBS, life insurance companies and the two GSEs ? hold more than 80 percent of the outstanding commercial real estate mortgage debt, according to the association.

In general over the past 15 years, the five investor groups saw their lowest delinquency rates during 2004-08 and their highest rates in 2010. The recent highs in delinquency rates for each group were still well below the record highs set during the commercial real estate crash of 1991-92.

EKNL, DROP - Penny Stocks Investing

First and foremost, we want to wish our members a safe and Happy Holiday!

Market will be open half day tomorrow and re-open on Wednesday and we will definitely be right there with our CORE plays EKO International (EKNL) and Fuse Science (DROP). No doubt looking for a Santa Claus rally for the history books.

We have seen opportunities in the past where key buying during ?Santa Claus rally? week set up for solid gains to follow and this holiday week will be no different. With the new year just around the corner, this week is definitely presenting some bargains for EKNL and DROP. We are not going to miss a beat on these plays this week!

What Does Santa Claus Rally Mean?
A surge in the price of stocks that often occurs in the week between Christmas and New Year?s Day. There are numerous explanations for the Santa Claus Rally phenomenon, including tax considerations, happiness around Wall Street, people investing their Christmas bonuses and the fact that the pessimists are usually on vacation this week.

Many consider the Santa Claus rally to be a result of people buying stocks in anticipation of the rise in stock prices during the month of January, otherwise known as the January effect.EKO International Corp.

Investors are getting ever so close to a monster rally with shares held by long and strong hands, and with a very thin share inventory. When trigger breakout event occurred, we can see EKNL soar super quick to record levels and in a ?blink of an eye? ? the prime time to load up on super undervalued shares is right here and right now ? we are that close.

We have seen the exact same lead up and a ?blink of an eye? trigger breakout with Fuse Science (DROP +83,000% gains) just prior to the history making breakout that not only was the talk of the investment community, it made some of our members millionaires who took the opportunities to load at similar levels

We have put a near term target of $2 for EKNL and we are determined to reach this level ? the potential of EKNL is XTREME, that is why we are committed to continue to profile EKNL all month and continue well into January!

Of course what really stands EKNL apart from everyone else is the relationships and key connections it has build so far.

imdTeaming up with iMDhealth.ca network just gave EKNL access to thousands of physician, diabetes education centers and health care providers for diabetics across Canada ? practically becoming EKNL?s sales force for the treatment of Nueropathy and the FREMS FDA approved technology.

EKNL released monster news announcing EKO?s Dr. Ziemer of NeuroVasc Medical Inc. and NCI, distributor of Neurometrix (NASDAQ:NURO)?s NC-Stat DPN check device are now available in 100 of WalMart-Canada stores.? Dr. Paul Ziemer, world renowned for his expertise in the medical field joined the team at EKNL.

http://www.themayerinstitute.ca/wp-content/themes/starkers-for-storyboard/images/logo.pngEKNL launched first of many Clinics including recent announcement of launching clinics in the USA. These clinics will start to treat patients with their FDA approved FREMS technology that was also presented at the 13th annual Medical last month!

Also, Dr. Ziemer teamed up with Dr. Snow of Neurometrix, a NASDAQ Listed company (NURO) for exclusive hands on demonstration of their testing unit at the show.

No doubt, these are MONSTER updates that are turning a lot of heads, and institutional investors now eying that multi-dollar target level.

These updates already give EKNL HUGE valuation and potential?

?BUT, IT IS WHAT?S STILL TO BE UNLEASHED BY EKNL THAT WILL NOT ONLY BE MIND ?BLOWING? IT WILL PROPEL EKNL PRICES ?SKY HIGH? AND INTO RECORD TERRITORY

Sharp Exit to battle with Timoleague Flyer in BAGS Track ... - Bettor

Sharp Exit to battle with Timoleague Flyer in BAGS Track Championship Final Stayers Div B

Sharp Exit will be eying a strong run in the BAGS Track Championship Final Stayers Div B at Perry Barr in Ireland on Sunday, December 23, 2012.

She is in very good form at the moment, as she was victorious in her most recent race, so the punters will definitely be interested in risking a lot of bets on her. The bookies will also rate her quite highly, which will boost her confidence tomorrow.

However, there are some other decent runners lined up against her in the Grade IR competition, which is scheduled to kick off at 15:29 GMT. This will make things interesting for the spectators and they will be eagerly awaiting the start of action at Perry Barr.

Speed will not be much important in the race, as the overall distance to cover will be 660 metres. Due to this, most of the contestants will look to save some energy at the start and will really push hard towards the final moments.

Although, the starting positions will not make a bigger difference in tomorrow?s race, yet some of the greyhounds will look to gain momentum once the traps are opened for racing. The winner will be awarded a cash prize of ?500 at the end of the day.

Timoleague Flyer will be eying this cash prize, as he is a consistent performer. He has represented his team in different classes, so knows how to handle pressure. Moreover, his performances have been really good, which will help him get the attention of the bettors.

The C. Gardiner?s trained hound will enter the competition from trap number six, which might allow him to attack at the start. However, he should be a touch careful, as there is a chance of running wide from that position.

The black dog finished as a runner up in his recent Grade OR contest, so his confidence level will be good. Despite that, he should remain focussed from the start until the end in order to outperform his rivals.

On the other hand, Sharp Exit will not be worried about the challenge from her rivals, as he is fully capable of handling pressure. Therefore, it will be interesting to see where she ends up in tomorrow?s race at Perry Barr.?

Home Improvements | Home Remodeling Advice

If the purpose of your home improvement project is to help sell the house, you should keep in mind that simple cosmetic changes are often more effective than installing new complex systems. For example, while a floor heating system might be a very cool feature, a simple paint job is more effective. A paint job makes the house look fresh and attractive to all potential buyers, whereas a floor heating system is just a neat add-on and not a selling point.

If you have watercolor paintings hanging in your home, try to place them where they do not receive direct sunlight. The sun, or any bright light, will cause the colors to fade over time. Your treasured paintings may lose their vibrancy?and value. Keeping them out of the sunlight will help preserve their colors.

Just because you bought a book on your home improvement or saw a show that highlighted how to do it doesn?t mean you?re an expert. If this is your first time completing a project like this you should expect additional costs and a longer time frame than someone you hire might take.

Do not overlook common household objects for solving organizational or storage problems in your home. You can make a coat rack from a board and some old cupboard knobs, for instance, and you can use baby food jars for storing small fasteners and pieces of hardware. Not only does this help you to get organized, but you are saving money and recycling, too.

Replacing lights is an important task when making home improvements. Most people notice the lighting of a room when they walk into it. The type of lighting needed depends on the room. For instance, dining rooms and living rooms benefit from chandeliers because it gives the room a relaxing feeling.

Is your home getting to hot in the day or is your home too bright for your liking? If so, you should try tinting the windows in your home. This is a fairly easy process that most people can do on their own. Additionally, tinting your windows saves a lot on your cooling bill.

There are many tutorials that can be found on any type of home improvement, probably more than you could possible imagine. Whether you find these tutorials online, in books, or from a friend, it is a great help to review these before and during the home improvement process. If you do not have the knowledge you need, you could be stuck with not very functional work.

These tips will help empower you to do your own repairs, replace what needs replacing, or remodel any room in the house, if you so choose. Having an amazing home doesn?t have to be something you leave to other people, and by following tips like these, you?ll get more skilled and more capable at making all the home improvements you dream of making.

One way to vastly improve your home is with an extension. Extensions come in many shape and sizes but the most popular are the kitchen extensions and strangely the porch conversion.

9 Ways To Renovate Your Home To Be Age Friendly

When an aging couple in Maryland decided to spend $110,000 they weren?t buying into a fixed annuity. They were remodeling their house to be a place where they can age gracefully, and allay their fears of retirement residences, reported Bloomberg BusinessWeek.

Here are 9 ways to renovate your homes instead of entering a retirement residence.

1. Make it user-friendly and safe for aging bodies.

Be proactive. It?s too late during an emergency situation and someone needs an immediate remodel to accommodate an injury or illness. Necessary designs, permits and construction are impossible in a short timeline.

2. Build in age-friendly features

Incorporate age-friendly features into every renovation project. Aesthetics aren?t so important. For example, honed marble is less slippery though less appealing than polished marble.

3. Don?t shy away from bigger-ticket projects

Dollars spent today may mean less time ? or no time ? in an assisted-living facility or nursing home. An expensive aging-in-place project could equate to years against moving to an assisted-living facility.

4. Insta-prep your home

Get rid of area rugs. They are sure-fire tripping accidents. Grip-easy handles should replace knobs that can be harder for arthritic hands. Heighten electrical outlets and lower light switches at doorways. These measures reduce the need to reach high up.

5. Do a serious lighting upgrade

A 75-year-old has lost the vision ability of 30 to 40-year-olds and needs about three times more light. Hallways and task lighting in the kitchen and in the bathroom are key areas for improvement.

6. Focus on the bathroom

Install grab bars near the toilet and at the entrance to a shower/bath. Hire a pro to ?install the washroom renovations. The bars need to be properly anchored in the toilet and shower areas.

7. Secure the stairs

Focus on making the stairs as safe as possible. Install railings on both sides to make it easier to navigate. Install wider doorways rather than the usual 28-to 32-inch clearance. Create contrast on each step by alternating coloration.

8. Utilize your sweet spots

Bring appliances and work spaces into spots that don?t require a person to stoop high or ?low. A contractor can build a raised floor for both washer and dryer. There may be expenses involved, but far less than the price of living in a retirement residence.

9. Tips for the kitchen

Relocate the microwave from above the stove to a?counter top?or low cabinet. Work areas can be relocated to low-height counters for sitting while preparing meals.

Syria rebels bombed as opposition open to peacekeepers

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian jets bombed rebel-held areas of Damascus on Saturday, residents said, as the opposition indicated it could accept an international peacekeeping force if President Bashar al-Assad is forced from power.

Warplanes attacked the Damascus suburbs of Kafar Souseh and Darraya, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition-linked group. The air strikes follow intensified rebel activity in the capital, Assad's seat of power, as well as successful stormings of government military bases in recent weeks.

"Syrian regular forces are trying to control the areas surrounding the capital," the Observatory said. Bombings targeted a continuous arc of rebel presence in the capital's outer districts from the northeast to the southwest.

Activists reported clashes and air strikes in the provinces of Homs, Deir al-Zor, Idlib and in Aleppo, where they said 14 rebel fighters were killed during an assault on an army base in the town of Khanasser early on Saturday.

It is difficult to verify such reports due to government restrictions on media access to Syria.

Syria's Internet connections began working again on Saturday after a two-day blackout, the worst communications outage in the 20-month-old uprising against Assad in which 40,000 people have been killed and hundreds of thousands forced to flee the country.

Opposition umbrella group the Syrian National Coalition might allow an international peacekeeping force into Syria if Assad and his allies leave power, coalition spokesman Walid al-Bunni said on Saturday.

Some opposition members have argued against international troops, saying their arrival could serve as a rallying call for Assad loyalists in an area near the Mediterranean where many of his minority Alawite sect live.

Assad, whose family has ruled autocratically for four decades, draws much of his support from the sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam. Most of the rebels are Sunni Muslims.

Bunni said the coalition was open to any proposal if Assad and his allies, including top officers in the military and security apparatus, were removed.

"If this is the first condition then we can start discussing everything. There will be no political process until the ruling family and all those who underpin the regime leave," he added.

Bunni, a physician who spent most of the period after Assad inherited power from his father in 2000 in jail as a political prisoner, was speaking at a news conference marking the conclusion of the first full meeting of the 60-member opposition coalition in Cairo.

"IRON AND BLOOD"

Britain, France and Gulf countries have recognized the Syrian National Coalition as the sole representative of the Syrian people.

Most foreign powers have condemned Assad, who has relied on his allies to stay afloat, especially regional powerhouse Iran. Russia, Syria's main arms supplier, and China have vetoed three U.N. Security Council resolutions condemning Assad and reject the idea of sanctioning his government.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused Western states on Saturday of trying to advance democracy abroad through "iron and blood."

"Advancing democracy through iron and blood just does not work, and this has been made clear in recent months - the past year-and-a-half," Lavrov said, according to state-run news agency Itar-Tass.

Russia repeated its opposition on Friday to NATO's potential deployment of Patriot missiles in Turkey, which wants them because of fears of a spillover from the war in Syria.

Syrian state television quoted a ministry of information statement saying Damascus international airport was open on Saturday and that the road leading to it was safe.

Since Thursday, clashes have been reported near the Aqraba and Babilla districts on the southeastern outskirts of Damascus which lead to the airport, effectively closing the road and leading EgyptAir and Emirates to suspend flights.

U.S. web tracking firm Renesys said in a blog post that it could confirm "a largely complete restoration of the Syrian Internet."

Rights groups said the communications drop off was a precursor to a wider offensive by government forces in the capital. Syrian security sources and diplomats say the government intends to seal off central Damascus from the restive suburbs.

Authorities had attributed the Internet outage to a "terrorist" attack or a technical fault. On Saturday, state news agency SANA gave a third reason for the outage, which is said was now restored: "maintenance work."

Residents contacted by Reuters in the capital, the central city of Homs, and northern Aleppo said they had connectivity.

The Problem With Revocable Living Trusts (in California)

By Zoran K. Basich, Elder-Care Attorney

More and more ?investment advisers? are selling Trusts as vehicles for preventing probate, avoiding taxes and providing for estate management. Approximately 40 million baby boomers soon will require increasingly expensive medical care during a longer life expectancy than their parents. As they become ill with Cancer, Strokes, Alzheimer?s disease, Parkinson?s disease and other debilitating illnesses care will, in many cases, be delivered in a Skilled Nursing Home setting.

The average stay at a nursing home can easily exceed $100,000 a year, and in some cases can last 10 or more years.

Often with proper planning for middle class families, most nursing home expenses can be paid for under the Long-Term Medi-Cal Program (the State equivalent of the Federal Medicaid program), without impoverishing the patient?s spouse and without depleting the Family Estate. Medi-Cal is not just a poverty program. Middle-class taxpayers suffering a catastrophic illness can often qualify, if they comply with applicable rules and regulations, which are complex and subject to frequent amendment.

Living Trusts can be a part of good Estate Planning for Long-Term Care. The ?income and principal clause? in most of today?s Trusts obligates the person administering your Trust to take whatever steps necessary to make certain you are cared for. This clause can force you or your spouse to use all Trust Assets for healthcare until the Trust is depleted. Assets held in a Revocable Trust at death are subject to an Estate Recovery. The State Director of Health Services is entitled to reimbursement for every cent of Medi-Cal benefits paid to the patient after age 55. That claim takes priority over any other Trust terms for payments to others, including spouses and children.

Under Medi-Cal regulations, typical trust assets ? real property, stocks, bank or investment accounts, vehicles and income ? are not exempt from Medi-Cal reimbursement claims. Those same assets, if held in a manner other than a Revocable Living Trust, could be exempted from reimbursement. California has the authority to place an estate claim against the property of a Medi-Cal recipient, including property that passes upon death to the recipient?s heirs through a Revocable Living Trust. This means that Trust Assets are viewed as cash available to privately pay the cost of a Nursing Home stay.

A Living Trust is not automatically compatible with effective Estate Planning for Long-Term illness and inheritance preservation. Living Trusts can, and will, interfere with your ability to rely on excellent government benefits. Even brown dwarfs may grow rocky planets: Sizing up grains of cosmic dust around failed star

ScienceDaily (Nov. 30, 2012) ? Astronomers using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) have for the first time found that the outer region of a dusty disc encircling a brown dwarf contains millimetre-sized solid grains like those found in denser discs around newborn stars. The surprising finding challenges theories of how rocky, Earth-scale planets form, and suggests that rocky planets may be even more common in the Universe than expected.

Rocky planets are thought to form through the random collision and sticking together of what are initially microscopic particles in the disc of material around a star. These tiny grains, known as cosmic dust, are similar to very fine soot or sand. However, in the outer regions around a brown dwarf -- a star-like object, but one too small to shine brightly like a star -- astronomers expected that grains could not grow because the discs were too sparse, and particles would be moving too fast to stick together after colliding. Also, prevailing theories say that any grains that manage to form should move quickly towards the central brown dwarf, disappearing from the outer parts of the disc where they could be detected.

"We were completely surprised to find millimetre-sized grains in this thin little disc," said Luca Ricci of the California Institute of Technology, USA, who led a team of astronomers based in the United States, Europe and Chile. "Solid grains of that size shouldn't be able to form in the cold outer regions of a disc around a brown dwarf, but it appears that they do. We can't be sure if a whole rocky planet could develop there, or already has, but we're seeing the first steps, so we're going to have to change our assumptions about conditions required for solids to grow," he said.

ALMA's increased resolution compared to previous telescopes also allowed the team to pinpoint carbon monoxide gas around the brown dwarf -- the first time that cold molecular gas has been detected in such a disc. This discovery, and that of the millimetre-size grains, suggest that the disc is much more similar to the ones around young stars than previously expected.

Ricci and his colleagues made their finding using the partially completed ALMA telescope in the high-altitude Chilean desert. ALMA is a growing collection of high precision, dish-shaped antennas that work together as one large telescope to observe the Universe with groundbreaking detail and sensitivity. ALMA "sees" the Universe in millimetre-wavelength light, which is invisible to human eyes. Construction of ALMA is scheduled to finish in 2013, but astronomers began observing with a partial array of ALMA dishes in 2011.

The astronomers pointed ALMA at the young brown dwarf ISO-Oph 102, also known as Rho-Oph 102, in the Rho Ophiuchi star-forming region in the constellation of Ophiuchus (The Serpent Bearer). With about 60 times the mass of Jupiter but only 0.06 times that of the Sun, the brown dwarf has too little mass to ignite the thermonuclear reactions by which ordinary stars shine. However, it emits heat released by its slow gravitational contraction and shines with a reddish colour, albeit much less brightly than a star.

ALMA collected light with wavelengths around a millimetre, emitted by disc material warmed by the brown dwarf. The grains in the disc do not emit much radiation at wavelengths longer than their own size, so a characteristic drop-off in the brightness can be measured at longer wavelengths. ALMA is an ideal instrument for measuring this drop-off and thus for sizing up the grains. The astronomers compared the brightness of the disc at wavelengths of 0.89 mm and 3.2 mm. The drop-off in brightness from 0.89 mm to 3.2 mm was not as steep as expected, showing that at least some of the grains are a millimetre or more in size.

"ALMA is a powerful new tool for solving mysteries of planetary system formation," commented Leonardo Testi from ESO, a member of the research team. "Trying this with previous generation telescopes would have needed almost a month of observing -- impossibly long in practice. But, using just a quarter of ALMA's final complement of antennas, we were able to do it in less than one hour!" he said.

In the near future, the completed ALMA telescope will be powerful enough to make detailed images of the discs around Rho-Oph 102 and other objects. Ricci explained, "We will soon be able to not only detect the presence of small particles in discs, but to map how they are spread across the circumstellar disc and how they interact with the gas that we've also detected in the disc. This will help us better understand how planets come to be."
