High debate stakes: Romney looks to gain momentum

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Barack Obama is cruising into the presidential debates with momentum on his side, yet he's still struggling to revive the passion and excitement that propelled him to the White House. Mitt Romney is grasping for his last, best chance to reboot his campaign after a disastrous September.

The fierce and determined competitors in the tight race have a specific mission for the three debates, the first of which is Wednesday night in Denver.

Obama, no longer the fresh face of 2008, must convince skeptical Americans that he can accomplish in a second term what he couldn't in his first, restoring the economy to full health.

Romney, anxious to keep the race from slipping away, needs to instill confidence that he is a credible and trusted alternative to the president, with a better plan for strengthening the economy.

"The burden in many ways is heavier on Romney," says Wayne Fields, a professor at Washington University in St. Louis who specializes in political rhetoric. "What we see right now is an uncertainty about whether he's ready for the job."

For all the hundreds of campaign appearances, thousands of political ads and billions of dollars invested in the race, this is a singular moment in the contest. Upward of 50 million people are expected to watch each of the debates, drawing the largest political audience of the year.

Forty-one percent of Americans reported watching all of the 2008 debates, and 80 percent said they saw at least a bit, according to a Pew Research Center poll.

That intense interest tends to crowd out everything else for a time, adding to the debates' importance. With polls indicating that Obama has been gaining ground steadily in the most competitive states, the pressure is on Romney to turn in a breakout performance.

The Denver debate, 90 minutes devoted to domestic policy, airs live at 9 p.m. EDT, with the two men seated side by side in elevated director's chairs. Romney and Obama debate again Oct. 16 in Hempstead, N.Y., and Oct. 22 in Boca Raton, Fla. Vice President Joe Biden and Republican Paul Ryan have their lone debate Oct. 11 in Danville, Ky.

With early or absentee voting already under way in more than half the states, any first impressions created in the debates could well be last impressions. What the candidates say is sure to matter immensely, but how they say it may count for even more.

"We remember visual impressions from debates more than we remember specific words," says Alan Schroeder, a Northeastern University professor who's written a history of presidential debates.

Whether the candidates smile or grimace, strike a confident or defensive pose, speak with a resonant or strained tone of voice, it all matters. That may be particularly true for the all-important undecided voters and those still open to changing their minds.

Staunch Democrats and Republicans may well be firm in their choices, says Patti Wood, an Atlanta-based expert on body language, but if less partisan voters are "frightened in general about their lives, if they're insecure, they're going to pick the most charismatic person."

Both candidates have challenges to overcome on that score, according to Wood.

Obama, 51, has been sounding "very tired and very strained" lately, she says, and Romney, 65, "has a problem with appearing superior and cold."

Overall, she says, "Romney is looking a little bit younger than Obama right now," in terms of energy if not wrinkles.

Both candidates are experienced and competent debaters. But each, setting the judgment bar high for his opponent, is working overtime to puff up the skills of the other guy and play down his own debate credentials.

Romney recently described the president as "eloquent in describing his vision" during the 2008 debates. But the GOP nominee added that Obama "can't win by his words, because his record speaks so loudly in our ears."

Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki stresses that Romney has been preparing for the debates with "more focus than any presidential candidate in modern history." Sketching sky-high stakes, Psaki says the Republicans fully expect the debates to be "their turning point" in the campaign.

The president himself mocked the idea that Romney still can alter the campaign dynamic.

"Every few days he keeps on saying he's going to reboot this campaign and they're going to start explaining very specifically how this plan is going to work ? and then they don't," he said last week while campaigning in Virginia.

For all their positioning, both candidates will use the debates to try to surmount the same challenges that they long have confronted.

Romney, frequently criticized for shifting his positions to sync up with the politics of the moment, needs to project "a kind of character, a kind of maturity that allows him to be presidential," says Fields.

Obama, an incumbent who's shown himself to be comfortable in the media glare, "doesn't have to prove that part," says Fields. "He has to prove that he has real answers to problems that have not been solved in his first term, and for which there is a great deal of unrest."

Romney is sure to be questioned anew about his caught-on-video comment dismissing the 47 percent of Americans who don't pay federal income tax as victims who won't take responsibility for their lives.

Former President Bill Clinton, offering a bit of unsolicited advice to the opposition, says Romney would be wise not to "double down on that 47 percent remark."

"That will cause difficulties, because we now know that the overwhelming number of those people work and have children," Clinton said recently. He added that the most important job for Romney is to "find a way to relate to more people in these debates and speak to more of them."

On Saturday, the Obama campaign posted a Web video urging debate viewers take Romney's claims of private-sector experience with a grain of salt. "Remember, it wasn't about creating jobs," the video says. It includes testimony from steel- and paper-plant workers laid off after Bain Capital takeovers.

Also Saturday, the Romney campaign announced plans for his wife Ann to speak at a rally Monday in Henderson, Nev., where Obama is planning three days of private debate preparation. And Romney points to Syria, Libya and Iran to criticize Obama's foreign policy as "one of passivity and denial" in his weekly podcast.

Meantime, there's no shortage of advice swirling around the two candidates: loosen up, study up, be aggressive, don't overdo it, admit mistakes, don't apologize, project confidence, ooze emotion, use humor, make eye contact, get more sleep.

It's enough to paralyze even the most skilled orator if not kept in perspective.

"That's what so tricky about this," says Schroeder. "Debates themselves are this kind of interesting blend of the choreographed and the spontaneous. ... What you want is for the candidate to be prepared but not to overlook those opportunities to improvise when you see an opening."

The stakes are lower for the debate between Biden and Ryan. It offers the prospect of a looser and more entertaining discussion between two candidates with vastly different styles and personalities.

In 2008, Biden's debate with Republican Sarah Palin attracted 70 million viewers, easily topping the 63 million high-water mark for the presidential debates that year.

The most inspiring company in the US? It's Apple

Spencer Platt / Getty Images file

A recent survey has found that Apple is regarded as the most inspiring company in the United States.

By Jacquelyn Smith, Forbes.com

We?ve known for a while that consumers are infatuated with Apple and its products. That was confirmed Monday when the company announced that it sold more than 5 million units of its new iPhone 5 since the product launched three days earlier. And on Tuesday a Georgia-based brand consulting firm dubbed the technology giant America?s most inspiring company.

Performance Inspired, Inc., an Atlanta consulting and training firm that helps organizations elevate performance through the science of inspiration, surveyed 2,175 consumers to identify America?s 25 most inspiring companies.

Forbes.com: The top 25 companies for work-life balance

Conducted online, the survey asked respondents which five companies they find most inspirational, and why. It also asked them to describe their most recent encounter with each company.

The goal of the survey was to find a correlation between successful companies and those that inspire their consumers. ?According to our latest research, consumers are not only feeling inspired by certain businesses, but are acting inspired by spending more with these companies while evangelizing to others about their inspiring experience,? said Terry Barber, chief inspiration officer for Performance Inspired. ?We now see there is a validated set of drivers to inspiration and when these drivers are activated, it elevates employee engagement that shows up in the customer experience.?

In Pictures: America?s 25 Most Inspiring Companies

For the second consecutive year, Apple is at the top of the heap. ?Apple is the most inspiring again this year because it has become a part of the consumer?s personal identity,? Barber said. ?Consumers wrote comments such as: ?Apple makes me feel more creative,? and ?Apple makes me feel entrepreneurial.? People were also inspired by the company?s ability to continue to innovate even without Steve Jobs at the helm.?

Barber said Apple fans also said they felt like they were a part of a special community. ?Some wrote in about how ?they? felt victorious after the settlement between Apple and Samsung,? he added.

Forbes.com: America?s most surprising six-figure jobs

Other companies on the list, like Target (No. 3) and Johnson & Johnson (No. 22), earned their rankings through global or community improvement plans. For a decade, Target has donated 5 percent of its pretax profits to the cities where it operates. In 2005, Target formed a partnership with the Salvation Army, creating an online donation system to help needy families.

Some big companies, often seen as profit-hungry behemoths, ranked well in the survey, too. Wal-Mart, for instance, earned the No. 2 spot?because respondents believe company keeps its promises and is authentic. In the branding firm?s analysis, Performance Inspired speculates that customers especially like Wal-Mart?s competitive prices and its commitment to giving back to the community. ?For many respondents, Wal-Mart was also seen as a much welcome source of employment for seniors,? Barber added. ?There was also very much of a polarization on the perception of how Wal-Mart treats its employees. The vast majority of negative comments regarding the company were on this issue. Yet, some of the more affirming comments came from people who identified themselves as either present or past employees of Wal-Mart.?

Forbes.com: The 10 most innovative companies in America

Respondents also liked companies that stick to their values. Despite it being at the center of controversy this year, Chick-fil-A, a fast-food chain with more than 1,600 locations, earned the No. 7 spot.

?Over the last three years since we?ve been doing this research, Chick-fil-A has always shown up as being very inspiring, so it just makes sense that there is a lot of equity and trust built up here and no doubt, they are leveraging some of that good equity during these times,? Barber said.

The company, founded by devout Christian S. Truett Cathy, keeps stores closed on Sundays so employees can spend time with their families and go to church.

Forbes.com: 10 steps to happiness at work

Small companies with good stories to tell also did well in the rankings. Blake Mycoskie, the founder of Toms Shoes (for ?Tomorrow?s Shoes?), which launched in Venice, Calif., in 2006, donates a pair of shoes to needy people in places like Argentina and Haiti for every pair that it sells. Toms ranks No. 18 on the list.

Goodwill (No. 23) ? a newcomer to the list ? is another ?outlier among so many high-power business brands,? Barber said.??Consumers are really appreciative of the Goodwill retail stores and the perceived feel-good value they are bringing to local communities.?

Another newcomer: Whole Foods. ?I believe one of the greatest stories lies behind Whole Foods,? Barber said. ?The company?s chief executive, John Mackey, appears to be on a passionate campaign around what he calls ?Conscious Capitalism,? an emphasis on grounding business around a profound purpose.?

Forbes.com: The 10 best websites for your career

Though the survey didn?t ask directly about companies? relationships with employees, those with a reputation for treating employees well got high rankings. For example, Google which is known for having one of the best work environments in the country, providing free meals and entertainment and encouraging employees to spend 10 percent of their time on creative projects unrelated to their daily jobs, earned the No. 4 spot this year.

What do consumers do when they are inspired by a company? The survey found that 86 percent of respondents say they would recommend the company to friends and family. Eighty-two percent would be loyal to that company, and another 92 percent would share their experience with others. Almost three-quarters (71 percent) reported they would spend more on a company that inspires them.

?This survey highlights the fact that a company needs to spend some time uncovering and mining its own inspirational DNA and it needs to show up, not just in an ad, but in the interaction between associate and customer,? Barber concluded.

Top 10 Most Inspiring Companies:

1. Apple

2. Wal-Mart

3. Target

4. Google

5. Microsoft

6. Amazon

7. Chick-fil-A

8. Starbucks

9. McDonald?s

10.Coca-Cola

PFT: Giants' Nicks likely out against Eagles

Reggie+Bush+New+York+Jets+v+Miami+Dolphins+bnB-l520_SAlGetty Images

We cover all of the biggest injury stories throughout the day on Friday, but feel free to use this as a one-stop shop to catch up on those posts and any other names worth mentioning that we?ll throw in here every Friday.

Panthers at Falcons

Linebacker Jon Beason is questionable for the Panthers and the team has already said that they won?t be moving Luke Kuechly to the middle in the event Beason can?t play on Sunday. Linebacker Thomas Davis is also questionable and guard Mike Pollak is out. For the Falcons, wide receiver Julio Jones is probable while cornerback Christopher Owens is the most notable of the four Falcons listed as out this week.

Bengals at Jaguars

The Bengals have issues at cornerback. Dre Kirkpatrick is still out and Jason Allen and Nate Clements are both doubtful. Leon Hall missed practice all week with a hamstring injury, but is listed as probable. Linebacker Daryl Smith is out for the Jags and they should get running back Rashad Jennings is likely to make his return to the lineup after being listed as probable.

Dolphins at Cardinals

Running back Reggie Bush and cornerback Richard Marshall are listed as questionable, but the expectation is that each of them will play this week. The news isn?t quite so good for Cardinals defensive tackle Darnell Dockett. He?s doubtful because of a hamstring injury and tight end Todd Heap and running back LaRod Stephens-Howling both earned the same designation.

Vikings at Lions

Both quarterbacks are probable after dealing with injuries this week. Linebacker Erin Henderson is out again for the Vikings thanks to a concussion, but defensive end Jared Allen is probable. Lions defensive tackle Corey Williams will miss the game after having knee surgery this week, running back Mikel Leshoure is questionable and safety Louis Delmas is doubtful as he makes an extended recovery from his own knee surgery.

Patriots at Bills

The Patriots will be without wide receiver Julian Edelman and tight end Aaron Hernandez. Tight end Rob Gronkowski, guard Logan Mankins and tackle Sebastian Vollmer are all questionable. The Bills hope to have running backs Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller, although both are listed as questionable following limited practice participation this week.

Saints at Packers

Defensive end Turk McBride, linebacker David Hawthorne and linebacker Jonathan Casillas are all out for the Saints. Wide receiver Greg Jennings is probable for the Packers, as is running back James Starks.

Raiders at Broncos

Oakland has ruled out tackle Khalif Barnes and cornerback Shawntae Spencer for a second straight game. Running back Darren McFadden is probable after being slowed by a shoulder injury this week and wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, while eager to get back on the field, is doubtful thanks to the blow to the head and neck he took in last week?s win against the Steelers. The Broncos are fairly healthy with the exception of safety Quinton Carter, who is out, and guard Chris Kuper, listed as doubtful.

Chargers at Chiefs

Chargers cornerback Shareece Wright is out again this week while tackle Jared Gaither has climbed the ladder to questionable while dealing with his ever-present back injury. Kicker Nate Kaeding is also listed as questionable, but he?s not going to Kansas City and Nick Novak will kick. The Chiefs offense could be in a tough way. Tight end Kevin Boss is out, running back Peyton Hillis is doubtful and three wideouts ? Dwayne Bowe, Steve Breaston and Dexter McCluster ? are all questionable.

49ers at Jets

The 49ers continue to list running back Brandon Jacobs and wide receiver Ted Ginn as questionable, just as they have before they?ve missed the team?s other games this season. Cornerback Darrelle Revis is out (and will be until his triumphant return for the Super Bowl) and wide receiver Stephen Hill is listed as doubtful, although you can go ahead and downgrade him based on Rex Ryan?s assessment of his chances of playing. Tight end Dustin Keller and linebacker Bryan Thomas, who have each missed the last two games, are questionable.

Seahawks at Rams

Seattle listed guard John Moffitt as doubtful and linebacker LeRoy Hill is questionable. The Rams will have another game-time decision with running back Steven Jackson and rookie defensive tackle Michael Brockers could make his regular season debut after missing the first three games with an ankle injury.

Titans at Texans

Tennessee wide receiver Kenny Britt and tight end Jared Cook are both questionable, although Cook was the only one to practice at all this week. The Texans listed wide receiver Lestar Jean as out and they have a slew of players, including quarterback Matt Schaub and running back Arian Foster, as probable.

Redskins at Buccaneers

Cornerback Cedric Griffin is out for the Redskins while wide receiver Pierre Gar?on and tackle Trent Williams have both been listed as questionable. The Buccaneers will be without cornerback Anthony Gaitor, but are otherwise injury free.

Giants at Eagles

The Giants won?t have tackle David Diehl again this week and cornerback Jayron Hosley and linebacker Keith Rivers have also been ruled out. Wide receiver Hakeem Nicks is doubtful and likely to miss a second straight game. Demetress Bell will start at left tackle for the Eagles in place of King Dunlap, but wide receiver Jeremy Maclin and defensive end Trent Cole are both probable for the game.

FDA approves Onyx and Bayer colorectal cancer drug

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved a new colorectal cancer pill developed by Onyx Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Bayer HealthCare.

The drug is called Stivarga, and it is designed to block several enzymes that promote cancer growth. The FDA approved Stivarga as a treatment for colorectal cancer that has progressed after treatment and metastasized, or spread to other parts of the body. The agency approved the drug about one month ahead of schedule.

In clinical studies, patients treated with Stivarga and standard treatment had median survival of 6.4 months, compared to 5 months for patients who were received only standard treatment.

The companies will market the drug together. Bayer developed Stivarga, and under an agreement between the companies, Onyx will get royalties on sales of the drug.

Stivarga, which was developed under the name regorafenib, is the second colorectal cancer drug to win FDA approval recently. In August the agency backed Sanofi's drug Zaltrap as a treatment for metastatic colon cancer in combination with chemotherapy.

The FDA says colorectal cancer is the third-most common cancer in the U.S. and the third leading cause of cancer death. It said around 143,460 cases are expected to be diagnosed in 2012, and about 51,690 people will die of the disease.

Onyx and Bayer have also asked the FDA to approve Stivarga as a treatment for gastrointestinal stromal tumors, which mostly occur in the stomach or small intestine.

The drug is approved with a warning connected to sever and sometimes fatal liver toxicity that was observed in some patients in studies.

The most common side effects of Stivarga in clinical trials included weakness or fatigue, loss of appetite, diarrhea, mouth sores, weight loss, infection, high blood pressure, changes in voice volume or quality, and hand-foot syndrome, a condition in which small amounts of the drug leak out of the blood vessels in the palms and the soles of the feet, causing reddened skin, tenderness, and peeling.

Shares of Onyx rose 2.6 percent to $84.64 on Thursday. The stock rose 36 cents to $85 in aftermarket trading.

Bayer HealthCare is a subsidiary of Germany's Bayer AG.

Intel details Clover Trail tablets: three weeks on standby, 10 hours of use, 'full' Windows 8 experience

Intel details Clover Trail tablet design 30 days standby, 10 hours active use, 'full' Windows 8 experience

You only have to look at the tidal wave of Ultrabooks to know that Intel design specifications can carry a lot of influence with manufacturers. That's why the chip-maker's claims about its latest reference tablet, built around a dual-core Atom Z2760 processor (aka "Clover Trail"), likely give us a broad hint of what to expect from devices like the forthcoming Lenovo Think Pad 2, ASUS Vivo Tab and Samsung ATIV Smart PC.

In particular, Intel has shown us slides claiming that the dual-core 1.8GHz chip with Imagination SGX545 graphics will offer the "best Windows 8 experience" on a tablet with "compatibility and support for traditional apps and peripherals." And if you think that sounds like a subtle jibe at ARM-based tablets running Windows RT -- a version of the OS that doesn't even try to play nice with existing software -- then you could be right. To be fair though, the point of RT is to offer superior portability, and that's why Intel is also keen to emphasize that Clover Trail won't impact too heavily on your freedom of movement. Tablets should come in below 1.5 pounds (680 grams -- similar to the RT spec and much lighter than a Windows 8 Pro tablet) and 8.5mm in thickness, with built-in 3G, 4G and NFC. You shouldn't need to carry a charger either, since a new power management system promises a distinctly un-laptop-like three weeks on standby and a full day of "active use" -- defined as being at least 10 hours.

Windows 8 tablets won't be like Windows 8 Pro machines, however, so don't go expecting USB 3.0, or a guarantee of 1080p visuals (most Clover Trail devices we've seen are 1,366 x 768) or souped-up security -- the Atom Z2760 is very much an evolved Medfield processor, with similar silicon and firmware, rather than a shrunken laptop chip.

Needless to say, what really matters is how well manufacturers adopt this design and what price points they manage to hit. Intel says that at least 20 different Clover Trail tablets are already in the works, and early price tags seem to be around the $799 mark -- a hefty demand for sure, but perhaps one worth paying for those who need full-fledged Windows 8 and true portability at the same time. RT tablets, meanwhile, will have to come in much cheaper than that in order to be worthwhile.

Giant 5000-year-old oak unearthed

The trunk of a giant oak-tree, thought by experts to be more than 5000 years old, has been unearthed from a field in Norfolk.

The 44ft (13.4m) Fenland Black Oak, or bog oak, was found buried in farmland at Methwold Hythe, near Downham Market.

Planks cut from the trunk will be dried over seven months in a specialist kiln.

A spokesman said the tree will make "a breathtaking table for public display giving an insight into the grandeur of these ancient giant forests."

This one is worthy of preserving for the interest of the nation?

End Quote Hamish Low Fenland Black Oak Project

Bog oak is generally found buried in farmland.

One of the rarest forms of timber in England, when dry it is said to be "comparable to some of the world's most expensive tropical hardwoods".

Experts have said the Norfolk bog oak is "the largest-ever intact 5,000-year-old sub-fossilised trunk of an ancient giant oak", but believe it could be just a section - possibly as small as a quarter - of the original tree.

Giant oaks died around 7000 years ago when a rise in sea level relative to the land caused rivers to back-up and flood the fens.

Trees perished while standing and then tumbled into the silt of the forest floor which led to their preservation.

Hamish Low, of specialists Adamson and Low, said: "This one is so special in that it is intact and, as far as I can tell, sound along its full 44ft length.

"Along with the fact it is impossible to know how long Fenland Black Oaks will continue to rise out of the soil, and their inherent fragility, this one is worthy of preserving for the interest of the nation."

Having taken a team of experts a day on Tuesday to unearth the tree and mill on site to 10 planks, the wood is being transported to London for drying.

Working as the Diamond Jubilee Fenland Black Oak Project, Mr Low will lead a team of apprentice carpenters in collaboration with the Worshipful Company of Carpenters, to create a 44ft table from the dried oak with the intention of putting it on show to the public.

"Most people in the woodwork business will think it's a ridiculous thing to try and attempt, but they are digging up less and less bog oak and there is very little of it on public display," said Mr Low.

"It's only by developing techniques over 20 years we've even dared to try and attempt this," he added.

Business Evolves, Does Your Sales Process?

Sure, there are some tried and true ways to handle sales and customer service that don?t really ever go out of style. However, if a salesperson also continually evolves and improves, they?re likely to stay ahead of the industry curve.

Here are some areas you may want to look upgrade your sales process:

Your ?Rolodex?

Are you using a paper system to track client names and numbers?

This may have worked in the past, and it never hurts to have an index of business cards, but you know you can?t always take your paper list of contacts with you. Consider upgrading to a digital CRM format that lets you access information from anywhere.

Not only might does a cloud-based contact database provide easy anywhere access to contacts, but it also allows you to add information on the fly that can help you manage your accounts better. You can also share these contact details with management and colleagues for collaboration purposes.

Your Day Planner

The old paper calendar might have worked well for decades in the world of sales but nowadays there are way better ways to manage your time. A digital calendar will help you set alerts so that nothing gets forgotten, it?ll help you book meetings with clients and colleagues, it?ll help you collaborate internally within your company, and more.

Loss of your paper calendar could be catastrophic but the new electronic versions can be backed up so that they can be accessed and updated from anywhere.

Your Sales Spreadsheet

If you?re using a sales spreadsheet to track what?s happening in your sales funnel , this is another outdated approach. What if you lose it? And is it displayed in an actionable way that helps you prioritize your workload and see, really easily, what your numbers are against your actual plan? A CRM tool is a much better approach that can help you not only track information but easily action what is most pressing. Consider reading this article Stop using Excel templates for tracking your sales pipeline? for more info on how a more automated solution could help you.

For example, if you implement a digital sales forecasting and pipeline tool and track your results you can see how effective your processes are at each phase of the sales process.

Using Business Intelligence Tools

Old sales tools didn?t exactly make it easy in terms of account management and business development with accounts.? It wasn?t easy to track old results against plans. Today?s BI tools can help you generate helpful business reports that make it clear to you how you?re really doing and how you might be able to boost results with customers.

There are many other ways to ensure your sales process is continually evolving. It is important to continually update your sales script.? Some companies use the very same? script for each customer instead of tailoring sales and marketing plans depending on the audience.

Reviewing your efforts regularly in terms of how you?re managing existing accounts and how you go after new business can help you make sure that you are going to continue to excel in the world of sales.

Incorporating Social Media into Your Email Marketing | Small ...

Believe it or not, we still talk to clients and prospects on a regular basis who don?t want to ?bother with email marketing? because they think email is a dying channel. They think they should be focusing their marketing efforts ? and dollars ? on social media marketing, or mobile marketing, or other emerging channels, instead of ?wasting time? on email.

But, according to a consumer study conducted in May, 97% of respondents check their personal email account every single day. In contrast, only 59% claim to update their Facebook status every day.

Now don?t get me wrong, I am in no way suggesting that you, or any small business, abandon your social media efforts and concentrate soley on email marketing. What I am suggesting is that you merge the two as much as possible. Don?t think of email and social media as totally separate and distinct channels. Instead, try to incorporate social media marketing into your email program and weave your email and list building efforts into your social media marketing.

Email marketing expert David Daniels has outlined a few points to keep in mind when incorporating social media into your email program:

Consumer Email Behavior: Leveraging Social in Email Marketing

?Email is an integral part of social marketing. Email was the first social networking tool. Email is our digital fingerprint; you need an email address to have a Twitter account or most social accounts?if you?re going to do anything online, email is a ??
http://www.clickz.com/clickz/column/2207399/consumer-email-behavior-leveraging-social-in-email-marketing

?

I especially like points #6 and #7 ? we put these issues front and center when we?re creating new marketing strategies for our clients:

6. Don?t start with more than what you can maintain.

7. You should be using social to drive prospects to your website.

The truth is, social media can be extremely time consuming. And there?s a good possibility that your target audience is active on more than one social media platform. But your social media efforts will be so much more effective if you build up a strong presence on one platform rather than several weak profiles on multiple platforms. This is especially important if you?re working with a consultant to get your social media marketing program up and running. The consulting firm will most likely have a staff member dedicated to developing and initiating your social media presence. But will you be able to maintain those efforts when you take over your accounts??So start small, be realistic about how much time and/or staff you can devote to social media, and don?t bite off (or let the consultant bite off) more than you can chew.

As for point #7, keep in mind that, regardless of the channel, email marketing and social media marketing (and mobile marketing, and telemarketing, and augmented reality marketing, etc etc etc) are still marketing. It?s great to have conversations with your prospects and listen to what your clients are saying and all the other benefits of going social, but if there is no result to your bottom line, you?re just wasting time and money. You need to take control of your efforts, have an end goal in mind, and track and measure everything ? and the best way to do that is by driving your prospects to your website. Social media platforms will come and go, terms of service will constantly change, but your website is your domain where you make the rules.

If you haven?t incorporated social into your email marketing yet, or if (egads!) you?re thinking of dropping your email marketing altogether, give us a call at 888-660-0062. We?d love to help you get started with a fresh new program that will reach your target market and impact your bottom line.

To Entrepreneur or Not to Entrepreneur ? The League of Ordinary ...

Post image for To Entrepreneur or Not to Entrepreneur

It?s really unfortunate that the Atlantic feels compelled to publish dribble like this. On just about any given week now, you can find one or two policy screeds delivered in the can-do voice of a motivational speaker taking up space between the rest of the site?s?actually respectable content.

?Scott Gerber,? according to his byline, ?is the founder of the Young Entrepreneur Council, co-founder of Gen Y Capital Partners, and an internationally syndicated columnist.? He is here to tell us about the wonders of?programs like his, and how the status quo is failing, specifically in higher education. Yes, it?s another rant about ?Liberal Arts? colleges.

His audience is clearly parents, as evidenced?by the first line, ?A degree does not guarantee you or your children a good job anymore.? With them hopefully left shaking in their boots, Gerber launches into a confused first paragraph. In short, he demonstrates that the economy is tough, and there aren?t enough jobs out there, not even for those with a Bachelor?s degree. He then follows that with, well, something that doesn?t follow, ?old-guard academic leaders are still clinging to the status quo ? and loudly insisting that a four-year liberal arts degree is a worthy investment in every young American?s future.?

A few trademarks of bull$#!% are present, like ?old-guard,? and ?clinging to the status quo.? But the larger point is that despite everything he just said, a college degree is still worth the investment if you?re willing to work hard at it. All. The. Data. Shows. This.

The buzzword littered throughout Gerber?s piece is ?entrepreneurship,?

?As someone who works every day to give more people access to entrepreneurship education, it?s refreshing to talk to educators who are adapting their curricula in the interest of actually preparing students for a new economy.?

The ?new economy? isn?t something Gerber is interested in explaining to us though. He?d much rather get his blood boiling about ?a college president who recently terminated his institution?s entrepreneurship education program. Not because of budgetary constraints or poor enrollment, mind you ? but because he ?didn?t understand the tangible value of such a program.??

Gerber responds by challenging this professor, or most likely any other, to name the ?tangible value? of four years of liberal arts education. This is odd for two reasons. One, it doesn?t actually address the issue. For any entrepreneurship guru to be?worth his or her salt, one would expect them to retort with some kind of hard data. After all, entrepreneurship is all about what works. But Gerber doesn?t. Indeed, he resorts to putting ?tangible value? in ?quotes,? a move that would seem to undermine the very point he?s trying to make with this construction.

Instead, Gerber seems to settle for ?entrepreneurship? being just as intangibly beneficial as ?liberal arts.? Continuing this strategy of the best defense is a good offense, he continues to malign college education.

?We keep telling young Americans that a bachelor?s degree in history is as valuable as, say, a chemical engineering degree ? but it?s just not true anymore. All degrees are not created equal.? Once again there are two things going on here. First, is there anyone, literally anyone, who thinks?they?d make as much money, or be as employable, if?their degree were in either history or chemical engineering? Who is telling anyone that?

The second point is that ?created equal? here is very reductive in this context. Of course they are not equal in employability or income prospects, nor are they equal in actual?effect, since both modes of study emphasize radically different subject matters and methodologies. But neither of those two facts means that one is necessarily more ?valuable? than the other. There is an argument to be had there, but it?s not one Gerber seems willing to commit to.

For Gerber though, the kind of arbitrary credential chase reinforced by the status quo?is bad not just for individuals, it also harms, ?the long-term vitality of our economy.? In that case however, the question of whether a liberal arts major or a chemical engineer are better prepared address the changing needs of the economy decades out is an open one. There are many reasons why a more generally educated person will have more of the flexibility required to adapt to the structure of the workforce as it evolves. They are many of the same reasons why, in theory, someone trained in entrepreneurship would be better for the long-term sustainability of the economy as well.

Gerber doesn?t ever really say what he means by entrepreneurship though. Only that most students don?t have access to ?entrepreneurship classes.? I use quotes because the idea of ?entrepreneurship classes? sounds somewhat contradictory. Isn?t the idea of entrepreneurship to get up off your arse and go do it? How do you prep people for that via the conventional lecture/project model?

Gerber champions Babson College, which he notes is,

?consistently ranked #1 for entrepreneurship. Since current president Len Schlesigner?signed on ? in the midst of the Great Recession, no less ? Babson?s faculty has pioneered its own teaching method, applying entrepreneurial thinking and hands-on learning to every aspect of campus life.?

Here he enlists the meaningless ?entrepreneurial thinking? only sentences after just having admitted it?s emptiness when he wrote, ?what parent wants to hear they are paying tens of thousands of dollars for their child to be an ?entrepreneur???

So what are Babson entrepreneurs doing?

?Today, every freshman who walks into Babson?goes immediately to?work with a team to create, develop, launch and manage a new business (and they donate?their profits to nonprofits). Students spend just 14 hours a week in class ? the other 154 are spent elsewhere, in special interest housing or working on student-led initiatives. Entrepreneurship is a lifestyle, not a course.?

At one point, so were the liberal arts. And 14 hours a week is no less than any other college student spends in class, so the ?just? is purposefully misleading. The rest just sounds like the weekly life of any other extra-active student.

Which leads me to wonder, what are the entrepreneurial skills that students learn at Babson, but not, for instance, while working on and managing a college newspaper or undergraduate journal, while searching for and creating new volunteer opportunities and programs, while organizing a theater production, art gallery, or concert, even just organizing a club sports team requires a lot of abilities (organizational, interpersonal, leadership, teamwork, problem solving, etc.) that I would assume are the basis for entrepreneurialism? What is entrepreneurialism if not those things dressed up in the assemblage of a business degree?

Gerber goes on and on though, never identifying what the heck he?s actually talking about, and settling instead?for gems like this,

?Programs like Babson?s are worth emulating not merely because they create the next generation of business owners and freelancers (independent workers are an especially fast-growing category). These programs enable students to think entrepreneurially ? to seize opportunity, take risks and create wealth. Simply put, entrepreneurship education gives young people a toolkit to apply their field of study to the real world.?

Did you know the ?gig-economy? is the new thing? Never mind that it consists mostly of professionals and laborers that companies have decided to contract out to rather than?keep on staff, it?s a growing part of the labor economy! In addition, I had no idea that there were actually courses out there in?how to seize opportunity, take risks, and create wealth. At least not ones that existed outside of late-night infomericals.

Now I?ve been harsh. So let me end on a more conciliatory note. When Gerber states that he?s not suggesting we get rid of the liberal arts, but rather that, ??Well-rounded? and ?self-sufficient? shouldn?t be mutually exclusive concepts, and combining experiential learning with access to business role models and public/private partnerships can fundamentally transform the way we think about workforce development,? I?m with him, to a point.

If you are going to college primarily to learn how to seize opportunity and create future wealth for yourself and the rest of the economy, then profitizing majors like communications, marketing, and design, and especially creative ones like theater, visual art, music and creative writing (which is not the same as English, which is not the same as literature??English Major? is as precise a label as ?Engineer? at this point) makes sense. But that is not the same thing as making all majors more self-sufficient.

Degrees in all of the?above would benefit from an increased emphasis on actual creation, collaboration, and distribution. Thanks to new media, everyone has to try and?be their own brand. Corporations just aren?t people, people are increasingly forced, at least in the labor market, to act like corporations, with images to be?managed and contacts to be?maintained. But there?s a difference between taking a course in how to set up a website, market your historical fiction e-book, and reach out to venues for readings and publicity purposes, and gaining experience in how to organize a poetry reading at a local bar, put together a neighborhood newsletter, or start a non-profit to address some social issue that?s going unaddressed by the respective branches of government.

The latter is about how to channel academic curiosity and learning into actual creative endeavors, the former is about how to make a buck in a way loosely related to a subject you once liked. I think we need a lot more self-starterism, but my suspicion is that Gerber is talking mostly about self-profiteering. He never outlines the new class of entrepreneurs he?s envisioning, or what they would be doing, so I can?t be sure. But his buzz-phrasing and rejection of the liberal arts (which spawned everyone?s favorite kind of Jobs), leaves me thinking what he really wants is to see the business school, with its record level of young undergraduate recruits, begin infiltrating the rest of the college campus.

You Should Be Constructing Your Own Email List ? Visual ...

List building is one of the most important tasks you can do in order to help create a successful business and anyone that has been an Affiliate marketer for a while already is aware of this. However for those of you who are fairly new to Internet marketing, this is something you are going to learn. In the Internet marketing industry you will hear everyone assuring you how important it is to build your own list.

Take a look at what writes http://www.nicecritic.com/incomev/. Why Every Single Internet Marketer Ought To Have Their Own Personal List

Having your own list can help you be successful online. In the event your customer was required to register to your list as a component of the purchase process, you might promote other health and fitness related cookbooks to them.

Now let?s move one step further and say you promote an arts and crafts "how to" pdf. You can set up an email list of people which are interested in arts and crafts, it is possible to get them to join for no cost by offering them a new hobby that they can do every week.

Another thing you need to understand is that every person on your list is worth about a month on average. In essence this means if you have a list of 2,000 members, you will earn ,000 a month.

OK Lists Are Very Important But Exactly How Do I Generate One

If you just want to build a list of members and do it the right way there are some things you are most likely going to need. A website will be the very first thing you will plan to get. And lastly you should have some type of product that you can give away to people to get them to subscribe to your list.

Once you have these three things you?re all set to go. You will simply create a simple squeeze page that shows your visitors a free product that someone into arts and crafts would appreciate. They type in their name and email in to the auto-responder form you now have on that page so as to get this product. As soon as they sign up, they should receive an email which thanks them for joining up and also explain to them that they have to verify that they joined up by clicking a link. They click the link and are rerouted to the download page for the product or service you are giving away. And that is truly all there is to it. Every time you give away one of your products and services you get a new person on your subscriber list that you can promote to for years to come.
