NEW YORK (AP) ? Optimism that a budget deal will be reached in Washington sent stocks modestly higher Thursday. A pair of economic reports also brightened the mood.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 36.71 points to close at 13,021.82.

The stock market took a brief turn lower when House Speaker John Boehner said little progress was being made in budget talks in Washington. The Dow was up as much as 77 points in morning trading, turned negative as Boehner made his remarks at 11:30 a.m., then slowly recovered in the afternoon.

Investors were encouraged by several positive economic reports, including a higher estimate of third-quarter U.S. economic growth, an increase in home sales and a drop in claims for unemployment benefits.

After a meeting with Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, Boehner told reporters that Democrats still haven't said which cuts they would accept to government benefit programs, suggesting a final budget deal remains a long way off. Republicans have said that they are open to increasing tax revenues as part of an agreement but only if they're accompanied by significant cuts to spending.

Investors have been closely watching the talks between the White House and Congress over the "fiscal cliff", a reference to sharp government spending cuts and tax increases scheduled to start Jan. 1 unless a deal is reached to cut the budget deficit. New developments in the talks have whipsawed the market.

"It's a headline-watching market with this fiscal cliff," said David Brown, chief market strategist of the investment research firm Sabrient Systems.

Brown says the ongoing negotiations are likely to cause the stock market to take sudden turns in the weeks ahead. "But things seem to be moving in the right direction," Brown said. "I don't think either party wants to get pinned with hurting the market or the economy."

In other trading, the Standard & Poor's 500 rose 6.02 points to 1,415.95. The Nasdaq composite index gained 20.25 points to 3,012.03.

In the market for government bonds, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note slipped to 1.62 percent from 1.63 percent late Wednesday.

Stock in Guess gained 55 cents to $25.81 after the clothing maker joined the ranks of companies pledging special dividends to shareholders before favorable tax rates on dividends expire at the end of the year. The clothing company said it will make a one-time payment of $1.20 per share on top of its regular quarterly dividend of 20 cents.

Dividends, now taxed at 15 percent, will be treated like ordinary income next year unless Congress and the White House extend current tax breaks as part of a budget deal.

The Commerce Department raised its estimate for U.S. economic growth to an annual rate of 2.7 percent in the July-through-September period. That's much better than the 2 percent rate estimated a month ago and more than twice the 1.3 percent rate logged in the three previous months.

The Labor Department also reported that the number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits dropped to 393,000 last week, in line with what economists had expected. It was the second straight drop after Superstorm Sandy drove applications higher earlier this month.

Target, The Gap, and others retail stores posted poor sales numbers, driving their stocks lower. It's a crucial time for retailers, who log a huge chunk of their yearly profits in the weeks running up to the holidays.

Among other companies making news:

? Kohl's plunged 12 percent, the biggest drop in the S&P 500 index. The company posted a drop in sales and said stores in the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast, areas hit by Superstorm Sandy, fared the worst. Kohl's stock lost $6.13 to $45.02.

? Kroger Co. rose $1.19 to $26.25 after the supermarket chain reported stronger quarterly profits and raised its earnings outlook for the year. Stronger sales helped the operator of Fred Meyer and Food 4 Less stores post better results than analysts had expected.

Your Florida license plate is about to become a collector's item. The venerable image of the orange and the words Sunshine State will soon be replaced by a new model. Starting this week, Floridians can vote online for their favorite new look. Unfortunately, the options provided by the DMV are more boring than driving the Turnpike.

So we thought we'd design some alternative options that represent our great state even better than the iconic orange. Vote for your favorite at miaminewtimes.com!

Design 1: "Florida: The Oxycodone State." Florida's economy is pretty simple: We get money from tourism, fishing, exorbitant highway tolls, and a running subsidy from America's Funniest Home Videos to supply the TV show with 50 percent of its content. But in South Florida, pill mills are still king. So why not honor their role in boosting the state economy? We'll even snag a motto from Road House: "Pain don't hurt."

Design 2: "Florida: America's Geriatric Alamo." Florida is chock full of two things: deadly weapons and people close to death. The elderly outnumber the rest of the state's population by roughly 40,000 to 1, and there are enough guns here to supply the world's militaries for a year. This license plate unites what are essentially the state's two mascots: old people and firearms.

Design 3: "Florida: The Hold-Your-Breath-on-Election-Night State." Admit it. It was pretty funny watching the rest of the country have an aneurysm as it feared Florida would again decide the presidential race. Our ignominious voting history is one Florida's defining traits. Let's celebrate our inability to master the insanely complicated task of filling in bubbles on a piece of paper with this plate, featuring a ballot being thrown into the garbage. Just know that your vote for this design will probably be lost or left in a box in a Broward elections office.

Design 4: "Florida: Cuba's 16th Province." In the rest of the United States, there aren't enough Cubans to start a baseball team. In Miami, there are so many cubanos you could form your own league. To that end, we commemorate our role as Latin America's Taiwan and stick it to Fidel in the process.

Design 5: "Florida: Proud Home of Bat Boy." You might have noticed that our governor, the esteemed Richard Scott, bears a passing resemblance to a certain supermarket tabloid icon. Bat Boy ? or to use his full name, Batthew Boy ? has been busy these past 20 years. He has terrorized children, run for governor in California, helped U.S. forces find Saddam Hussein, and bitten Santa Claus. But in his old age, he has retired to Florida to become an incompetent public official, and it's high time we honor him.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Pop star Ke$ha made a name for herself with infectious dance-pop hits but the singer-songwriter is stepping out of her Auto-Tune comfort zone on "Warrior", out this week.

Ke$ha, 25, stormed the charts with hit songs about drinking, partying and having a good time, such as "TiK ToK" and "Your Love is my Drug" from her 2010 platinum-selling album "Animal".

Ke$ha talked with Reuters about the pressures of following up the success of her first album and responding to her critics.

Q: Did you feel additional pressure while working on this album after the success of your debut, "Animal"?

A: "Everybody keeps asking me about pressure, and I think a lot of other people maybe are feeling pressure about this record, but I just want to make a good record. If I sat around trying to make a number one record, I'd just be too consumed with that. I just want to make an awesome, kick-ass record that I love and that my fans love."

Q: Was there anything that you weren't happy with on the first album and that you wanted to change for the second?

A: "I just wanted to make sure my entire personality was presented more accurately. I feel like people really got to know the super-wild side of me but then sometimes a more vulnerable side. I didn't really feel comfortable expressing it. So this time I kind of forced myself to express a little bit more vulnerability, less Auto-Tune, less vocal trickery. It's a little more raw."

Q: You received a lot of criticism for your use of Auto-Tune, masking your true singing voice. Was that a valid criticism for you, when many others use it?

A: "I remember having this conversation with my producer, and him saying, 'We're using a lot of vocal tricks,' and I said, 'People will get to know me as my career goes on, I just want it to sound really weird and cool and clubby right now, and super electronic.' I made a conscious decision to use Auto-Tune for effect, as ear candy, and vocoders and chop up my words.

"This time around, I have heard so many different people say I can't sing, it's quite frankly irritating, so I ... made a five-song acoustic EP ('Deconstructed', out on December 4) that's kind of like my middle finger to all those people that said I couldn't sing, and there's more of my voice on this record. You know, haters are going to hate, you just have to do what you want to do."

Q: Talk us through some of the collaborations on "Warrior". There's quite a variety, such as with Iggy Pop and Ben Folds.

A: "Ben Folds is a friend of mine. He gave me a giant glitter grand piano that's in my house, so that one was natural. The Flaming Lips was probably surprising for a lot of people because we're two super-different genres of music but we had the most fun and we made so many songs, it was super insane. We're like best friends, we text everyday now, so that kind of came naturally. The one that I really have been working on for years was a collaboration with Iggy Pop. He's one of my favorite musicians and artists of all time, so that was super exciting for me, because I respect him so much."

Q: You've written tracks for Kelly Clarkson and Britney Spears, and you've written all the songs for "Warrior". What did you want to bring out in your lyrics this time round?

A: "I definitely wanted to maintain the irreverence, because that's why my fans like me. It's because I'm super honest, not always PG rated ... but I didn't want to let the haters somehow cramp my style or get the best of me, so I maintain my irreverence ... I also really wanted to show the other side of my personality, which kind of is more nerve-wracking to show people, being a real person and the vulnerable side of my personality and voice. So there are tracks on this record that are super vulnerable and were hard even to write. I had to force myself to sit down and write these songs."

Q: You've carved a distinctive image and also just launched your latest collaboration with Baby-G watches. How do you want to evolve your career in the future?

A: "I think that with this record, I really wanted to show that there are no rules or boundaries in art, at all, like I sing and I can use crazy Auto-Tune vocoders and I can rap and I can do a song with Iggy Pop. You can do all these things that make sense. You don't have to just be one thing, like, you don't adhere to any sort of stereotype or any boundaries or any rules, so for me it's really fun to break down these boundaries."

Q: You came in at the forefront of the electronic dance music explosion in the pop charts two years ago. Why do you think EDM is doing so well?

A: "Dancing is one of the ways we, as adult human beings, still get to play and it's socially acceptable. Little kids play all the time, but as we grow up, we're supposed to just not play anymore, so our version of that is going out and dancing, and I think it's one way people are still visceral and animal-like."

Analyst ABI Research expects mobile phone subscriber penetration levels in Africa to pass 80 percent in the first quarter of next year. In Q3 this year, it said the continent's 54 countries and 1.08 billion people had accumulated 821 million mobile subscribers, up 16.9 percent year-on-year -- to 76.4 percent -- and it expects this to grow to 1.12 billion subscribers by 2017.

LONDON (Reuters) - Prime Minister David Cameron said on Wednesday that MPs should make Britain's media subject to an independent system of regulation.

Speaking the day before judge Brian Leveson is due to announce his findings on British media ethics after a year-long inquiry, Cameron said the status quo needed to change but gave no indication of whether he would support statutory regulation.

"The status quo, I would argue, does not just need updating - the status quo is unacceptable and needs to change," Cameron told parliament, adding that he hoped all parties would work together to ensure independent media regulation.

The Leveson inquiry was set up by Cameron after the phone-hacking scandal at Rupert Murdoch's News of the World, a News Corp Sunday tabloid the media tycoon later shut down.

"This government set up Leveson because of unacceptable practices in parts of the media and because of a failed regulatory system," Cameron said.

"What matters most ... I believe, is that we end up with an independent regulatory system that can deliver and in which the public will have confidence."

A representative for Jessica Simpson told TODAY.com that she won't be?commenting on a report from Us Weekly?which says the star is pregnant with her second child. Simpson gave birth to daughter?Maxwell Drew just seven months ago.

The magazine cites an unnamed source in its cover story, saying that the pregnancy came as a surprise to the "Fashion Star" mentor and her fiance of two years, Eric Johnson. "It definitely wasn't planned. But yes, Jessica is pregnant again," the?source says, noting that Simpson is "overjoyed."

Since Simpson's reps don't want to speak right now, it might be wise for interested parties to keep a close eye on the star's Twitter?account, which is where she confirmed her first pregnancy. Simpson used the account recently to tweet a photo of her fiance and Maxwell, attaching a Thanksgiving message to her followers: "I am so grateful for my new lil family!"?

The spotlight has been firmly affixed to Simpson since giving birth to Maxwell -- aside from this latest report, any and all news of her post-baby weight loss has been closely monitored. Simpson hasn't said exactly how much she gained while pregnant or exactly how much she's lost since she delivered her daughter in May, but she did speak out in September admitting that the weight doesn't come off easily. "I didn't realize it didn't all come off with the baby," Simpson told USA Today.

E! News meanwhile reached out to Weight Watchers?on the baby No. 2 news. Simpson is a spokesperson for the company. "Any questions related to Jessica's personal life can only be answered by her team," Stephanie Schulman, public relations manager at Weight Watchers, told E!. "We do not disclose financial details about our relationships with any of our ambassadors."

Over the past several months, dolphins have washed ashore along the northern Gulf Coast with bullet wounds, missing jaws and hacked off fins, and federal officials said they are looking into the mysterious deaths.

The most recent case was of a dolphin found dead off the coast of Mississippi, its lower jaw missing.

Officials from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Monday they're asking everyone from beachgoers to fishermen to wildlife agents to be on the lookout for injured or dead dolphins ? and any unusual interaction between the mammals and people.

"It's very sad to think that anyone could do that to any animal," said Erin Fougeres, a marine mammal scientist for NOAA's southeast office in St. Petersburg, Florida. "There have been some obviously intentional cases."

Fougeres said five dolphins have been found shot. In Louisiana, two were shot in 2011 and one in 2012. And in Mississippi, three were found shot this year, the most recent one last week, which was first reported by the Sun-Herald newspaper.

Besides the shootings, a dolphin in Alabama was found with a screwdriver stuck in its head over the summer. Another in Alabama had its tail cut off, and that animal survived. Still others were missing fins or had cuts to their bodies.

"I think it is outrageous," said Moby Solangi, the executive director of Institute for Marine Mammal Studies in Gulfport, Mississippi. "These animals are very docile, very friendly and they're very curious. They come close to the boats, so if you're out there, you'll see them riding the bows. And their curiosity and friendship brings them so close that they become targets and that's the unfortunate thing."

Dolphins are among the species protected by the 1972 Marine Mammal Protection Act. Violators can be fined up to $10,000 per violation and sent to prison for a year.

The California-based Animal Legal Defense Fund said it is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whomever harmed the dolphins.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Hewlett-Packard now has a legal headache to compound its misery as the company tries to recover from a series of setbacks that have hammered its stock price and raised doubts about its future.

An HP stockholder who owns 200 shares is suing the company in a complaint that alleges management concealed problems in two key acquisitions that have turned into financial albatrosses.

The lawsuit filed Monday in a San Francisco federal court comes after Hewlett-Packard Co. stunned Wall Street last week with its own allegations of accounting shenanigans at Autonomy, a business software maker acquired for $10 billion last year. HP referred its findings about the alleged fraud to securities regulators in the U.S., and the United Kingdom, where Autonomy was based before the acquisition.

Other shareholder lawsuits are likely as investors try to recover some of the wealth that has evaporated since HP replaced Mark Hurd as its CEO in August 2010.

The revelations of a suspected accounting scandal within Autonomy caused already skittish investors to dump HP's stock. HP had already been losing favor because its personal computer and printer businesses have been faltering as more people buy smartphones and tablet computers.

To make matters worse, HP disclosed in August that its $13 billion acquisition of technology consulting service Electronic Data Systems wasn't working out as well as management envisioned.

The trouble in Autonomy and EDS has forced HP to absorb nearly $17 billion in accounting charges in the past two quarters, resulting in the biggest losses in the company's 73-year history. The Autonomy deal was negotiated while HP was being run by Leo Apotheker, who was ousted 14 months ago. The EDS acquisition closed in 2008 when Hurd was still in charge.

Monday's lawsuit filed by shareholder Allen Nicolow also alleges that HP knew that the EDS and Autonomy deals were duds long before management acknowledged the problems. The complaint alleges HP's management tried to whitewash things in an attempt to prop up the company's stock price.

HP, which is based in Palo Alto, Calif., declined to comment on the lawsuit.

HP's shares closed Monday at $12.74, leaving them worth less half their value at the beginning of the year. The shares peaked this year at $30 in February. Nicolow bought 200 shares of HP stock at $21.87 in May, leaving him with a paper loss of about $1,900 at Monday's close.

Nicolow's lawyers are hoping to get the lawsuit certified as a class-action representing all HP shareholders who bought the company's stock between Aug. 19, 2011 and Nov. 20 this year.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages from the company, Apotheker and current HP CEO Meg Whitman. Catherine Lesjak, HP's chief financial officer, and James Murrin, the company's chief accounting officer are also named as defendants.

In statements last week, Whitman said HP didn't learn about Autonomy's alleged accounting ruse until a whistleblower alerted her after she replaced Autonomy CEO Mike Lynch in May. Lynch maintains Autonomy did nothing wrong and that HP came up with the allegations of deceptive accounting to cover up the damage caused by its own bad management.

JERUSALEM (AP) ? A poll shows about half of Israelis think their government should have continued its military offensive against Palestinian militants in Hamas-ruled Gaza.

The independent Maagar Mohot poll released on Friday shows 49 percent of respondents feel Israel should have kept going after squads who fire rockets into Israel. Thirty-one percent supported the government's decision to stop. Twenty percent had no opinion.

Twenty-nine percent thought Israel should have sent ground troops to invade Gaza.

Israel and Hamas agreed to a cease-fire two days ago.

The poll of 503 respondents had an error margin of 4.5 percentage points.

The same survey showed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud Party and electoral partner Israel Beiteinu losing some support, but his hard-line bloc still able to form the next government. Elections are Jan. 22.

LONDON (AP) ? The Church of England should hold another vote on women bishops as soon as possible, its representative in the House of Commons said Thursday, while some members suggested stripping the church of its exemption from sex-discrimination laws.

Legislation to permit women to become bishops was blocked in the church's governing General Synod on Tuesday, a result that has drawn harsh criticism in Parliament.

"This is not an issue which can in any way be parked for the next couple of years or so awaiting another round of synod elections," said Tony Baldry, a member of Parliament who is official designated to speak for the church.

"There has to be an understanding that this is an issue that has to be resolved as soon as possible," he said in a Commons debate.

Church legislation to permit women to serve as bishops failed to win the necessary two-thirds majority among lay members of the General Synod. Church officials have said it could take five years to lay the ground for another vote, but Baldry said this should not be necessary.

"It is perfectly possible for a different and amended measure to be considered by General Synod," he said.

The church has been unable to find a formula which meets the objections of traditionalists who believe only men can be priests and bishops, without at the same time offending women by restricting their authority and status as bishops.

Frank Field, a legislator and former member of the General Synod, introduced a bill on Thursday to strip the church of its exemption from sex-discrimination laws. More drastically, there has been talk of ending the church's status as the state church governed by the monarch.

"We might, in fact, be doing the church a favor by seeking to review its constitutional status," said Eilidh Whiteford of the Scottish National Party.

Field said the church was granted an exemption from the sex-discrimination law in 1975 "on the basis we understood that they were going to sort their own affairs out."

?"Any organization that thinks it can turn its back on half of the talent in the country, and thinks it will be taken seriously, needs some sort of serious wake-up call," Field said in a BBC radio interview on Wednesday.

Labour's Diana Johnson said the church had been "held to ransom by a few narrow minds" and was left "looking outdated, irrelevant and frankly eccentric by this decision."

Baldry, a Conservative, suggested that the church should reconsider how it elects members of the General Synod so that it reflects the views of ordinary members.

The Church of England is a product of government interference, established by King Henry VIII who appointed himself as head. The government still formally appoints the archbishop of Canterbury, the spiritual leader of the church, and 26 bishops are allocated seats in the House of Lords.

Parliament has a role in church affairs, and would have had to ratify the female bishops legislation had the General Synod approved it.

The Gaza crisis teeters between the momentum of violence and a cease-fire all sides desperately want but no one can easily stomach. Many lives tragically hang in that precarious balance, but the outcome does not. Israel enjoys such overwhelming military superiority over Hamas militants that a tactical victory has always been assured, as evidenced by the lopsided death toll to date of over 100 Palestinians killed to three Israelis. The only question from the outset of Israel?s launching of ?Operation Pillar of Defense??in response to escalating rocket attacks from Gaza, was at what cost?

Even as rockets, guided bombs, and naval artillery continue to crisscross the skies over one of the most densely populated parcels in the region, however, the second Gaza war has already offered a revealing glimpse of a future Middle East in the post-Arab Spring era. The fact that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has cut short her Asian trip with President Obama and rushed to the region to try and stave off an Israeli ground invasion suggests that she grasps the strategic implications of that vision. With the sound of air raid sirens echoing all the way to Tel Aviv and impact clouds blossoming on the horizon, Israeli leaders contemplating that vastly altered Mideast landscape should also find it deeply troubling.

The Gaza conflict has highlighted two powerful trends that have emerged from the Arab Spring revolutions. In country after country, democratic elections have elevated Islamist governments that have strived to more accurately reflect the will of the Arab street, and no grievance more inflames Arab public opinion than the Palestinian cause. The fact that those new governments are not only Islamist but weak (or, in the case of the Syrian government-in-waiting, fighting a violent civil war) has also created far more fertile soil and room to maneuver for violent Islamist extremist groups.?

Gaza offers an early preview of how those trends can conflate disastrously. With Islamist governments giving support and diplomatic legitimacy to Islamic militants who Israel and the United States consider terrorists, the conflict has empowered radicals and marginalized moderates in the Palestinian nationalist movement. Left unchecked, that dynamic has the potential to push nascent governments to the radical right, ensnare Israel in a perpetual cycle of tactical skirmishes with an ever-more-potent opposition, and over time doom the prospects for a negotiated peace. The net result would leave Israel, and by association the United States, increasingly isolated in the region.

?With the backing of Egypt, Turkey, and Qatar in this conflict, the Islamists of Hamas are demonstrating that they are the primary force within the Palestinian movement, and that [Palestinian Authority President] Mahmoud Abbas has no influence over the situation,? said Dennis Ross, formerly President Obama?s special adviser for the Middle East. The new status quo, he said, is thus strengthening radical elements and weakening moderates in the region. ?That?s a very negative trajectory.?

Consider what prompted Hamas to break an uneasy ceasefire and publicly take credit for escalating rocket attacks on Israel. Regionally over the past 18-months, violent jihadi groups have flocked to the fighting in Syria; launched multiple suicide bombings in Iraq; seized territory in Yemen and Mali; and attacked the U.S. consulate and killed four American diplomats in Libya. Likewise, extremist Salafi and jihadi groups have been increasingly active in Egypt?s Sinai and next-door in the Gaza strip.?

?There?s been tremendous tension within Hamas for some time as it attempted to balance its role as the governing power in Gaza with its identity as the face of the Palestinian resistance,? said Matthew Levitt, a senior fellow in counterterrorism at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. With Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Salafi groups increasingly operating inside Gaza in the past year, he said, Hamas felt its power challenged from the radical right. ?The increased rocket attacks were a way for Hamas to reestablish its resistance credibility,? said Levitt. ?

As an offshoot of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas also rightly calculated that it could depend on far more diplomatic support from Cairo than it had received during the long reign of former President and secular strongman Hosni Mubarak. President Mohammed Morsi, himself a Muslim Brotherhood official, called Israel a ?terrorist nation? because of its actions in Gaza. Not even Hamas leader Khaled Meshal could have anticipated, however, the outpouring of diplomatic support from around the region, which included meetings in Cairo with Morsi, the emir of Qatar, and Turkey?s Islamist Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who accused Israel of ?ethnic cleansing? in Gaza. Hamas also received supportive visits to Gaza during the crisis from senior Tunisian and Egyptian officials.

After Israel?s 2008 ?Cast Lead? operation against Hamas that killed more than 1,000 Palestinians in Gaza and shattered Israel-Turkish relations, U.S. military officials redoubled efforts to bolster the secular Palestinian Authority by training and equipping Palestinian security forces that have kept the peace on the West Bank ever since. The strategy, U.S. generals said, was to give Palestinians a moderate and secular alternative to Hamas and bolster the peace-making prospects of the Palestinian Authority?s?Abbas, a man who rejects violence and is widely considered the most moderate Palestinian leader ever.

In the intervening four years, however, Israel?s refusal to halt settlement expansion in the West Bank and East Jerusalem as a precondition to restart peace talks, despite considerable pressure from the Obama administration, has left Abbas with little to show for his moderation. Later this month, a dispirited Abbas is scheduled to unilaterally go to the United Nations and seek nonmember state status for Palestine in a futile and symbolic gesture that Israel has labeled an act of aggression. Meanwhile, real rockets rain down on southern Israel, Hamas leader Meshal is being feted in Cairo like a head of state, and the lyrics to a new hit song on the West Bank carries a pro-Hamas message that roughly translates to ?give violence a chance.?

In the after-action reviews, Operation Pillar of Defense will inevitably be characterized as another tactical military victory for Israel that dealt a severe blow to Hamas. Viewed strategically, through the prism of a radically altered Middle East landscape, it looks like anything but.

Dr Penny Spikins, from the Department of Archaeology, suggests a desire to prove their trustworthiness, rather than a need to demonstrate their physical fitness as a mate, was the driving force behind the fine crafting of handaxes by Homo erectus/ergaster in the Lower Palaeolithic period.

Dr Spikins said: "We sometimes imagine that early humans were self-centred, and if emotional at all, that they would have been driven by their immediate desires. However, research suggests that we have reason to have more faith in human nature, and that trust played a key role in early human societies. Displaying trust not lust was behind the attention to detail and finely made form of handaxes."

The 'trustworthy handaxe theory' is explained in an article in World Archaeology and contrasts sharply with previous claims that finely crafted handaxes were about competition between males and sexual selection.

Dr Spikins said: "Since their first recovery, the appealing form of handaxes and the difficulty of their manufacture have inspired much interest into the possible 'meaning' of these artefacts. Much of the debate has centred on claims that the attention to symmetrical form and the demonstration of skill would have played a key role in sexual selection, as they would have helped attract a mate eager to take advantage of a clear signal of advantageous genes.

"However, I propose that attention to form is much more about decisions about who to trust; that it can be seen as a gesture of goodwill or trustworthiness to others. The attention to detail is about showing an ability to care about the final form, and by extension, people too.

"In addition, overcoming the significant frustrations of imposing form on stone displays considerable emotional self-control and patience, traits needed for strong and enduring relationships."

Handaxes, or bifaces, appeared around 1.7 million years ago in Africa and spread throughout the occupied world of Africa, Europe and western Asia, functioning primarily as butchery implements. Handaxe form remained remarkably similar for more than a million years.

Dr Spikins said: "Trust is essential to all our relationships today, and we see the very beginnings of the building blocks of trust in other apes. The implication that it was an instinct towards trust which shaped the face of stone tool manufacture is particularly significant to our understanding of Lower Palaeolithic societies. It sets a challenge for research into how our emotions, rather than our complex thinking skills, made us human.

"As small vulnerable primates in risky environments where they faced dangerous predators our ancestors needed to be able to depend on each other to survive -- displaying our emotional capacities was part of forming trusting relationships with the kind of 'give and take' that they needed."

Dr Spikins points to other higher primates, particularly chimpanzees, as well as modern human hunter-gatherers to back up her theory of trustworthiness.

"Long-term altruistic alliances in both chimpanzees and humans are forged by many small unconscious gestures of goodwill, or acts of altruism, such as soothing those in distress or sharing food," said Dr Spikins.

"As signals of trustworthiness, these contribute to one's reputation, and in hunter-gatherers reputation can be the key to survival, with the most trustworthy hunters being looked after most willingly by the others when they are ill or elderly.

"The form of a handaxe is worth considerable effort, as it may demonstrate trustworthiness not only in its production, but also each time it is seen or re-used, when it might remind others of the emotional reliability of its maker."

The Trend Lab name is on a label attached on the bottom of the chair with date codes TL1007C through TL0812C, which are read as TL two-digit month and two-digit year followed by C. These date codes include 10/07 thru 08/12 or October 2007 thru August 2012 production. All chairs were sold with matching ottomans, which are not part of the recall. New chairs with "Remedy 2012" stamped in ink on the bottom side of the chair are not subject to this recall. Reason: Laceration and choking hazard
