The Real Housewives of Orange County Season 7 Preview: Double D-licious!

We're less than two weeks away from the return of Bravo's longest-running franchise, The Real Housewives of Orange County.

What scripted drama have writers come up with for cast members Tamra Barney, Gretchen Rossi, Alexis Bellino, Vicki Gunvalson and Heather Dubrow? E! News has spoken to a number of them and provided the following preview:

The Real Housewives of Orange County Season Seven Cast

Barney has downgraded in the chest department, reducing the size of her 34 Double Ds - and she couldn't be happier about it.

"It's been one of the best things I have ever done in my life," she says. "I feel a lot more confident without my implants."

Rossi, meanwhile, worried that newbie Dubrow might "have a stick up her ass," but Heather says she was "pleasantly surprised [by] how well we all got along" on the show. Boring!

Gretchen and Vicki will have it out over Slade Smiley, the former's shady boyfriend. Won't Tamra also have a lot to say about him, too, considering past comments? No, actually:

"I knew that the only way to move forward was just to forgive and ask for forgiveness," Rossi says of her and Tamra's relationship. "It has become a very true and authentic friendship."

Vicki's divorce from Don will also take center stage. And, of course, THG will be there every step of the way with weekly reviews and commentary!

LA detective in Simpson-Goldman murders dies at 70 (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Philip Vannatter, the Los Angeles police detective who served as a lead investigator in the 1994 murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman, has died.

His brother, Joe, says Vannatter died Friday in Southern California of complications from cancer. He was 70.

Vannatter spent 28 years with the LAPD, mostly as a homicide detective. He later consulted on cold-case murders.

He was among the first detectives on the scene at former football star O.J. Simpson's mansion in June 1994, following the stabbing deaths of Simpson's wife Nicole and her friend, Ron Goldman. Vannatter testified at the murder trial, at which Simpson was acquitted.

In 1977, Vannatter conducted the investigation that led to the arrest of film director Roman Polanski on charges of having unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl.

Identity theft insurance not always worth the cost ? Maine Business ...

The phrase ?identity theft? has become one of those terms that makes one?s blood run cold. We?ve heard so many stories of financial losses, ruined credit and related horrors that we react emotionally to the subject.

That emotional response has prompted many consumers to buy insurance that kicks in if some form of identity theft strikes the insured. The question before us is, is such insurance worth the cost?

There?s no simple answer, as is usually the case in consumer matters. The quick historical view back to 2006 finds Consumer Reports said such coverage was ?typically not worth the money.? The magazine notes more than half of ID theft protection is sold by banks, and that those premiums amount to a consumer subsidy for federally required loss protection through credit card and bank account fraud. The passing of time hasn?t changed CR?s opinion that you can ? and should ? take more effective steps yourself to protect your credit and good name.

ID theft insurance typically costs $120 to $300 a year. That?s more than victims often incur through the theft and misuse of their credit card numbers, the most frequent type of ID theft. Federal law limits liability in such cases to $50 per card.

Those who sell the coverage point to the time-consuming process of restoring credit and correcting information on their credit histories. The insurers say their policies can help consumers cope with what can be a trying and frustrating process.

Most people in the insurance industry give the same advice they would when buying other types of coverage. Find out what the policy limits are; the National Association of Insurance Commissioners says most ID theft policies have policy limits of $10,000 to $15,000. If the policy covers lost wages, find out how the coverage is triggered and what limits apply. Know if there is a deductible; some policies require the holder to pay as much as $500 toward the cost of reclaiming your financial identity before the insurer pays a penny.

Before buying, check your homeowner?s insurance policy. It may include ID theft coverage, or you might be able to add coverage more affordably than buying separate coverage. If you decide to buy a separate policy, compare the coverage of several companies.

The insurance commissioners warn against becoming a victim of insurance fraud by making sure the agent and company you?re dealing with are licensed to do business in Maine. Find the Bureau of Insurance online ( http://www.maine.gov/pfr/insurance), by phone (207-624-8475 or TTY 888-577-6690) or by writing to the Bureau at 34 State House Station, Augusta ME 04333.

David Leach, principal consumer credit examiner for the Maine?s Bureau of Consumer Credit Protection, advises people to be their own advocates. Leach says it?s critical for each of us to get one free credit report from one of the reporting agencies (Experian, Equifax and Trans Union) every four months. Do this by visiting www.annualcreditreport.com and only that site. That, plus keeping a close watch on all credit card activity, will help keep identity thieves at bay.

As to separate insurance, Leach says, ?Consumers who sign up for these types of services are paying close to $250.00 a year for a service they can essentially run themselves.? He notes that most financial institutions that issue credit cards will waive all losses in cases of identity theft or fraud. Visit the bureau?s website at www.credit.maine.gov.

OrcaM sphere constructs detailed, digital 3D models of wares while you wait (video)

Ever wanted a 3D digital copy of all those Little League trophies? Well, the NEK has whipped up something to lend a hand that's a bit larger than another recent scanner. Enter the OrcaM, an Orbital Camera System capable of producing an accurate, digital 3D model of objects up to 80cm (about 31.5 inches) wide and weighing up to 100kg (around 220lbs). Making use of seven shooters simultaneously, the system photographs the object while projecting various light and shadow combinations in order to determine the ware's geometry. The OrcaM is able to reproduce high-quality digital reproductions with a geometric accuracy less than millimeter (nearly .04 inches). As if that wasn't enough, it produces complete color, texture and reflectivity maps so that every minute detail is accounted for. Once your to-be-copied object has been loaded, the OrcaM takes over and is automatic, churning out the completed rendering shortly after the requisite photos are taken. Hit the video up top for a look at the beast in action.

Ohio voters want fracking halted for safety studies: poll (Reuters)

CLEVELAND (Reuters) ? Ohio voters by a wide margin want a halt to hydrofracking until more impact studies are conducted, though they believe there are economic benefits to drilling for natural gas and oil, a Quinnipiac University poll released on Thursday found.

The poll comes just weeks after Ohio ordered the shutdown of five wells around Youngstown that accept waste materials from the fracking process, after a series of earthquakes that could be related to their operation.

Seventy-two percent of voters polled said there should be a halt in hydraulic fracturing, or simply fracking, in Ohio until more was known about the impact of the process, Quinnipiac found. Fracking uses massive, high-pressure injections of water, chemicals and sand to release trapped oil and gas.

Sixty four percent of respondents supported drilling for natural gas and oil because of the potential economic benefits to Ohio, and 29 percent opposed drilling due to the possible environmental impact.

"They recognize the economic value of drilling for fossil fuels in the state, but are worried about potential environmental risks of the specific technique -- hydro-fracking," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the university's polling institute.

Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,610 registered Ohio voters from January 9 to January 16 for the poll, which has a margin of error of 2.4 percentage points.

Youngstown has experienced 11 earthquakes since the wells started using extremely high-pressure injection to force the waste materials into permeable rock, the latest on December 31.

Scientists monitoring the seismic activity in the Youngstown area found that the last two earthquakes were near the same depth and location of a disposal well. Since the shutdown, material has been removed from the well to relieve pressure.

State officials have not yet decided whether the wells will be shutdown permanently.

Fracking is widely used in the oil and gas industry and has sparked controversy in other parts of the country including in Pennsylvania, where it is used in natural gas exploration.

In bin Laden town, father mourns another militant

(AP) ? On Jan. 14 at 8:12 p.m., Khushal Khan's wife got a call on her cell phone.

"Your son has been martyred," the voice said at the other end of the line. The man then hung up.

The end for Khan's youngest son, Aslam Awan, came when a drone piloted remotely from the United States fired a missile at a house along Pakistan's border with Afghanistan. Awan was among four people killed, U.S. officials said this week, describing Awan as an "external operations planner" for al-Qaida. British authorities say he was a member of a militant cell in northern England who had fought in Afghanistan.

The Jan. 10 strike in the militant stronghold of North Waziristan that killed Awan was a victory for the CIA-led drone program at time when relations between Washington and Islamabad are very strained, in part by the missile strikes. It was one of the first drone attacks after a hiatus of some six weeks following a friendly fire incident in which U.S. forces killed 24 Pakistani border troops, nearly leading to a severing of ties with Islamabad.

The drone attacks generate anti-American sentiment inside Pakistan, but have been credited with significantly weakening al-Qaida in one of its global hubs.

For his family, the call came as a final curt word about the fate of a son they had heard little from in over a year.

Awan grew up in the northwestern Pakistani town of Abbottabad, a few kilometers away from the house where Osama bin Laden was slain. His father worked in a bank in Britain in the 70s and then in Abbottabad until he retired a few years ago. His four other sons remain in Britain, where they have prospered ? one is a surgeon, another is a doctor, the third an engineer and the fourth is a banker.

It seems doubtful Awan had any contact with bin Laden in the town. But Awan's background here reinforces a striking association between this well-ordered, wealthy Pakistani army town and al-Qaida militants, which began before bin Laden was killed here in May last year when a team of American commandos flew in from Afghanistan.

Now 75 and recovering from a heart operation, Khushal Khan answered questions Saturday from an Associated Press reporter in the garden of his house, making the most of some winter sun. He defended his son's memory against charges of militancy.

"I don't believe this is true, my son was not indulging in these things," he said. "It can't be correct."

Khan said Awan followed his brothers' footsteps and went to Britain in 2002 on a student visa.

Awan lived in Manchester for four years, during which time he joined a militant cell that aimed to bring Muslims to Pakistan for militant training, according to prosecutors at the time and a British media report. He told his father he was studying at Manchester University, but it's unclear whether he ever graduated.

The cell was headed by a British al-Qaida commander called Rangzieb Ahmed who was captured in Pakistan in 2006 and sent for trial in Britain, where he was sentenced to life in prison for directing terrorism, according to Britain's Daily Telegraph.

A letter he wrote a to a longtime friend and fellow Pakistani, Abdul Rahman, rhapsodized over the "fragrance of blood" from the battlefield of jihad and his commitment to militancy, according to prosecutors in the trial of Rahman, who was sentenced to six years in jail in 2007 for spreading terrorist propaganda in Manchester. It apparently referred to a stint fighting jihad in Afghanistan, but when that occurred is not known.

The judge said then Awan was believed to have left England for Afghanistan.

"Awan was very well connected to known extremists in the UK. It highlights that the threat is still there," said Valentina Soria, a terrorism researcher at the London-based Royal United Services Institute. "This group were not just wannabes, they were active and with links to al-Qaida central."

There are thought to be about 900,000 Pakistani Muslims in England ? many of them living in London and in northern cities. British authorities have said nearly all the plots and attacks on British soil have some connection to Pakistan.

Awan returned to Abbottabad in 2007, around the time that bin Laden was settling in to his large house, though that doesn't mean Awan was in touch with him or any of his couriers. U.S. officials have previously said the al-Qaida leader was cut off from the rest of his network and wasn't meeting other militants for security reasons.

Awan began to associate with Sipah-e-Sahaba, an extremist group that has a political wing as well links to al-Qaida, according to a police officer in the town who knows the family. The officer didn't give his name because he didn't want to be seen as adding to Khan's pain.

Khan said he last saw his son or heard his voice in 2010, when Awan asked for funds to build a house and they fought over the fact he wasn't working.

"That was the point when I had to forcefully ask him to go out earn some money," he said. "But my words hurt him, and he left home with only the clothes he was wearing."

Khan said he initially feared his son had been kidnapped when he didn't return or contact him. But after a few months, Awan called his wife and told her he was in Miran Shah, the largest town in North Waziristan. He said he was running a general store and dealing in second-hand clothes.

Local intelligence officials said Awan was known by the nom de guerre Abdullah Khurasani, and was highly prized in al-Qaida circles because of his education, computer skills and foreign contacts.

Al-Qaida, Taliban and other militants from around the world congregate for training and networking in North Waziristan, and Miran Shah is a key logistical base. The town is too dangerous for reporters to visit, but locals who have traveled there say hundreds of Pakistan and foreign militants live there openly, unmolested other than by the U.S. missile attacks on its outskirts. The Pakistani army says it doesn't have enough resources to launch an operation in the region.

The missile strike program began in earnest in 2009 and has been stepped up by the Obama administration.

Abbottabad is home to the Pakistan army's top military academy and hundreds of officers and soldiers live in what is one of the country's more secure towns. The fact that bin Laden hid there for so long in plain sight triggered intense international suspicions that the military was sheltering him.

Al-Qaida's No. 3, Abu Faraj al-Libi, lived in Abbottabad before his arrest in 2005 elsewhere in northwest Pakistan, American and Pakistani officials have said. Five months prior to the bin Laden raid, Indonesian al-Qaida operative Umar Patek was arrested in the town following the arrest of an al-Qaida courier who worked at the post office.

U.S. officials have said Patek's arrest in Abbottabad was a coincidence.

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. ? The Kraft Foods Company will be closing its Tarrytown offices and moving most of its local employees to Chicago by the end of the the year.?

About 225 employees of Kraft's beverages business unit will be transferred from the company's Tarrytown location to Chicago by December 2012 as part of a major company restructuring,??Kraft spokesperson Mike Mitchell said. That number includes some in the research and development area of desserts.

Mitchell said about 140 research and development staff would be staying in the New York-New Jersey area at a site yet to be determined. The fate of the remaining 75 employees is still up in the air, Mitchell said.

?We anticipate by the middle of the year people will have a good sense of where they'll be,? Mitchell said, noting that employees have already begun to meet with the Human Resources division to discuss the changes.

Kraft announced Tuesday that it would be realigning its workforce and consolidating management centers in the United States throughout 2012 as it splits into two public companies, one for groceries and one for snacks.

Kraft said approximately 1,600 positions in North America would be eliminated from its sales, corporate and business unit areas. About 20 percent of those jobs are open positions, the company said.

"Consolidating our management locations is a sound business move," said?Tony Vernon, Executive Vice President and President,?Kraft Foods North America?and CEO of the future grocery company. "Having the majority of our business units together in one location will provide greater development opportunities for our people and will help us continue building our brands more efficiently and collaboratively."

Android Kids App: Ellison the Elephant

Ellison the Elephant

Here's another children's book that's made it to Android, courtesy of the folks at Oceanhouse Media. Ellison the Elephant is the story of -- you guessed it -- Ellison, who "trys to make a big trumpet sound like his friends and his sister, but all he gets is a little toot." Know how you feel there, pal. But through the help of his imaginary friend, Ellison finds his own voice.

The book features the usual "Read to me," "Read it Myself" and "Auto Play" options, including word highlighting. And the whole thing's interactive -- tap the images to find hidden sounds, and pan and zoom through the original artwork. Very cool.

We've got download links for Ellison the Elephant after the break.

Wholesale prices declined slightly last month

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. wholesale prices fell last month because companies paid less for food and energy, evidence that inflation remains tame.

The Labor Department said Wednesday that the producer price index, which measures price changes before they reach consumers, declined 0.1 percent in December. That follows a 0.3 percent rise the previous month and is the second drop in three months.

Excluding volatile food and energy costs, so-called core wholesale prices rose 0.3 percent. It was the largest increase in five months. Higher prices for pickup trucks, cars, and pharmaceuticals drove the increase.

Still, overall wholesale prices are trending lower. They increased 4.8 percent in December compared to the same month a year ago. That's the slowest annual increase since January and down from a recent peak of 7.1 percent in July.

And the increase in core prices may be temporary. Flooding last year in Thailand may have disrupted some auto supply chains, pushing pickup truck and car prices higher.

Higher truck prices accounted for about one-third of the increase in core prices.

"Both headline and core inflation should be a lot lower by the end of this year," said Paul Ashworth, chief U.S. economist at Capital Economics, in a note to clients.

Lower wholesale costs mean manufacturers and retailers don't face as much pressure to raise prices for consumers in order to maintain profits. That could keep consumer price inflation in check.

Low also inflation allows the Federal Reserve with more leeway to keep interest rates low and take other steps to boost the economy.

The Fed projects consumer price inflation will fall from about 2.8 percent in 2011 to roughly 1.7 percent this year. That's in the Fed's preferred range for core inflation of about 1.7 percent to 2 percent.

Food prices fell 0.8 percent, mostly because of a big drop in vegetable prices. Tomatoes fell 36.9 percent, the most since May, while lettuce prices dropped by almost 25 percent. The drop follows a big increase in vegetable prices in November.

Pork prices fell last month by the most in more than three years, and chicken costs also declined.

Energy costs also dropped 0.8 percent, in part because of a decline in seasonally adjusted gas prices. Residential natural gas costs also fell, reflecting an increase in natural gas drilling from U.S. shale rock deposits.

A small amount of inflation can be good for the economy. It encourages businesses and consumers to spend and invest money sooner rather than later, before inflation erodes its value.

Wholesale price inflation peaked last year and most economists expect that it will continue to moderate. The prices of oil and agricultural commodities such as cotton and corn have fallen after spiking in early 2011.

The decline in commodity prices pushed down gas prices and enabled retailers to offer discounts on many goods. That helped boost consumer spending, which makes up 70 percent of economic activity.

Consumer spending likely grew at the fastest pace in a year in the final three months of 2011. Some economists estimate that it rose at a 3 percent annual pace in the October-December quarter, up from a 1.7 percent rate in the third quarter.

As a result, overall growth may top 3 percent in the fourth quarter. That would be an improvement from the 1.8 percent annual pace in the July-September quarter and 0.9 percent in the first six months of the year.

Crabs hither, shrimp thither

Like the boroughs of New York City or the arrondissements of Paris, deep-sea communities are turning out to have a strong local flavor.

In the waters off Antarctica at the southernmost seafloor vents where hot water percolates from below, piles of hairy crabs swarm in the thousands. In the middle of the Indian Ocean lives a motley collection of creatures never before seen together. And south of Cuba, at the world?s deepest vents, shrimp rule.

Thanks to a recent string of oceanographic expeditions, scientists are learning that there isn?t a stereotypical hydrothermal-vent ecosystem that exists everywhere. Rather, each locale hosts its own eclectic residents, in patterns that may hint at how life spread through the ocean over geological time.

?It allows us to move beyond the picture we?ve had so far, where you go to a new area and you find new and different species,? says Jon Copley, a marine ecologist at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, England. ?Now we can say what are the relationships, the differences and similarities among all these places. That?s much more useful knowledge.?

The classic picture of a deep-sea vent ecosystem comes from the first glimpses researchers had of these otherworldly realms during the late 1970s. Explorers in deep sea submersibles like ALVIN saw giant tubeworms, mussels and shrimp living off chemical energy provided by warm hydrothermal waters, fueled in turn by the volcanic activity of new seafloor being born.

But near Antarctica, in the only hot-water vents known in the frigid Southern Ocean, tubeworms and mussels are nowhere to be seen. A 2010 expedition found the seafloor crawling with thousands of a newfound species of Kiwa crab, a light-colored creature with long hairy arms. This particular species also has hair on its chest, so much that a graduate student on the cruise nicknamed them ?The Hoff? crabs, after hirsute actor David Hasselhoff. ?It?s visually really quite astonishing,? says team leader Alex Rogers, a deep-sea biologist at the University of Oxford in England. ?You have huge heaps of these crabs.?

Crabs usually die in polar waters because they can?t flush magnesium from their blood in the cold. But these animals survive by scrabbling over one another for the position closest to the 380? Celsius water pouring from the seafloor.

Along with the crabs, the researchers spotted smaller numbers of other creatures, including barnacles, limpets, snails and a predatory seven-armed starfish. The findings appeared January 3 in PLoS Biology.

?There was a feeling that perhaps the Southern Ocean was a root of dispersal for hydrothermal faunas between other large oceans,? says Rogers. ?So it was very surprising when it turned out to be a completely distinct vent community.? The extreme cold and seasonal swings in Antarctic waters may exclude animals such as mussels and shrimp, whose larvae need to feed at sea upon hatching, the scientists speculate.

Half a world away but just as puzzling are deep-sea vent animals along the Southwest Indian Ridge in the Indian Ocean. New seafloor crust is being born there at some of the slowest rates in the world, suggesting a relative lack of volcanic activity in the rocks below. But in 2007 a Chinese expedition discovered hydrothermal vents along the ridge at an average density of 2.5 vent fields every 100 kilometers.

?That number is big, about two to three times what scientists expected to find,? says chief cruise scientist Chunhui Tao of the Second Institute of Oceanography in Hangzhou, China. Tao and his colleagues, who describe their survey in the January Geology, think that magma welling up locally may fuel the hydrothermal vents.

Last year, the International Seabed Authority granted China a permit to explore 1,000 kilometers of the Southwest Indian Ridge, including the active vents, for possible mining of metal deposits. Before that could happen, Rogers says, ?there was a real feeling that we had to get in and document these vents.?

So last November and December he, Copley and other biologists checked out the ?Dragon Vent? there. In some ways, the animals there are similar to those near Antarctica, Copley says. There is a yeti crab, but probably not the same species as the Antarctic one and not present by the thousands. There are some shrimp, but not nearly as many as in the nearby central Indian Ocean. And there are a lot of scaly-footed snails, but not enough to take over the place. ?Elsewhere you tend to find one species dominating,? Copley says. ?Here we?ve got at least four different types all jostling for it. It?s quite a crossroads.?

The idea of a deep-sea crossroads has inspired recent trips to a third place, the Cayman trough in the Caribbean Sea. Volcanic activity has been going on there for 50 million years, Copley says; 3.1 million years ago, the isthmus of Panama closed nearby, cutting off direct circulation between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Exploring the Cayman trough, scientists reasoned, might tell them more about how deep-sea creatures once moved through this watery gateway.

A spring 2010 cruise to the vents yielded a surprise. The Cayman animals most closely resembled not those in the Pacific or at the closest known cold-water seeps 1,500 kilometers away in the Gulf of Mexico, but those at hot-water vents along the mid-Atlantic ridge ? a full 4,000 kilometers away. At a hot-water vent 4,970 meters down, the dominant species was a new type of shrimp, the British scientists reported online January 10 in Nature Communications.

American researchers, led by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, left Florida on a research cruise on January 6 to further explore the Cayman vent field.

?A single eight-week cruise can completely change our ideas about how these systems evolved and how species are distributed,? says Rogers. ?It really gives you some idea of the level of our knowledge of deep-water ecosystems.?

Back Story ? MISSED OPPORTUNITY

In 1976, oceanographers exploring the seafloor near the Gal?pagos Islands were astonished to spot mussels, anemones and crabs living around deep-sea hot springs, totally isolated from ecosystems in shallower parts of the ocean. The vents? striking ?black smoker? chimneys, like this one near New Zealand, quickly became icons of undersea exploration. But some scientists now say hydrothermal vents could have been discovered in Antarctic waters a decade earlier if scientists had realized what they were seeing. Library research recently unearthed a 1966 photograph, taken 2,377 meters deep along the Southern Ocean?s East Scotia Ridge, that shows animals at what?s now known to be an active hydrothermal vent. Oceanographers at the time ?simply didn?t recognize what they were investigating,? says Alex Rogers, a marine biologist at the University of Oxford in England. ?If they had, the course of scientific history would have taken a very different route.?

Pakistan president leaves country amid tensions

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari left for Dubai on a scheduled one-day trip on Thursday, local television stations reported, amid growing tension over a memo seeking U.S. help in preventing a coup by Pakistan's powerful military.

The president's trip comes during the worst tensions between Pakistan's civilian government and the military since a coup in 1999.

Government and party officials said the president was attending a wedding in Dubai and would be back in Pakistan on Friday morning.

They said that the trip was not connected to the current crisis. They didn't give their names because they were not authorized to release the information.

Earlier, sources close to the president told Reuters that Zardari might go to Dubai for further medical tests following his admission to hospital there last month for heart treatment.

"This trip will be for a follow-up medical checkup and then he'll be returning right away," said a Zardari associate.

Slideshow: Pakistan: A nation in turmoil (on this page)

In December, Zardari, 56, flew to Dubai for medical treatment sparking rumors that he had fled the country anticipating a coup.

He was treated for what Pakistani officials said was a transient ischemic attack, in which blood supply to a part of the nervous system is cut off, but not for long enough to kill tissue as in a stroke.

'Grievous consequences'
On Wednesday, Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Reza Gilani fired the defense secretary, Lt. Gen. Naeem Khalid Lodhi, amid an ongoing crisis that pits the civilian government against the powerful military leadership.

The army warned darkly of "grievous consequences" as a result of the standoff, which is hampering U.S. efforts to rebuild shattered ties with the nuclear-armed nation that are needed to negotiate an end to the war in neighboring Afghanistan.

An official told The Associated Press that Gilani had fired retired Lodhi because of "misconduct" relating to his role in submitting statements by the army and spy chief to the Supreme Court about a scandal involving a memo sent to Washington that is rocking the country.

The memo was allegedly sent to Washington asking for its help in reining in the army. The memo outraged the army, and the Supreme Court ordered a probe to establish whether it had been sanctioned by Zardari.

The official didn't give his name because of the sensitivity of the situation, the AP said. NBC News later confirmed that Gilani had dismissed Lodhi.

A senior military official told Reuters the latest tension was "very serious," and Pakistani newspaper Dawn reported that the army chief had summoned an emergency meeting of the corps of commanders.

Although Pakistan is a U.S. ally, their relations are often difficult and anti-U.S. sentiment runs high.

The Associated Press, Reuters, NBC News and msnbc.com staff contributed to this report.

Penn State officially names O'Brien coach; Paterno says he's 'pleased'

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Penn State has hired New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien as its head coach, the first change in leadership for the storied football program in nearly a half-century.

The announcement caps a turbulent two-month period that began with the firing of Hall of Famer Joe Paterno on Nov. 9 in the aftermath of child sex abuse charges against retired assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

Not only is O'Brien replacing Division I's winningest coach, but he must also guide a program shrouded in uncertainty. Besides the criminal investigation into Sandusky, the NCAA has launched its own inquiry.

The 42-year-old O'Brien was set to be formally announced at a news conference Saturday morning.

Penn State hadn't hired a head football coach in 46 seasons. In between, the 85-year-old Paterno won 409 games and was elected to the Hall of Fame.

"I am thrilled to be the head coach of the Penn State football program," O'Brien said in a statement. "As head coach of this special football program, it is my responsibility to ensure that this program represents the highest level of character, respect and integrity in everything we do."

He said that encompassed coaches, players and anyone else involved in the 125-year-old football program.

"There is tremendous pride in Penn State football and [we] will never, ever take that for granted," O'Brien said.

This was O'Brien's first year coordinating the Patriots' high-scoring offense, but he has also coached star quarterback Tom Brady since 2009 and spent 2008 coaching receivers.

O'Brien recently was in the spotlight when he and Brady got into a heated argument, shown on national television, after Brady threw an interception in the end zone in the fourth quarter of the Patriots' 34-27 win over the Washington Redskins on Dec. 11.

New England closed the regular season on an eight-game winning streak, and scored 513 points, the most in the AFC. Brady threw for 5,235 yards and 39 touchdowns, while had just 12 interceptions.

Brady has described O'Brien as a great coach and friend. Receiver Julian Edelman on Friday in Foxborough described O'Brien as charismatic and emotional.

"We have found the man to take Penn State football forward," Acting Athletic Director David Joyner said. "Needless to say, we have been looking for someone with some very special qualities, beginning with a heart that beats to the values and vision of Penn State University and our Penn State football legacy and tradition."

O'Brien has no apparent ties to Penn State and a proud program tarnished by a scandal that also led to the departure of President Graham Spanier.

O'Brien and Paterno do share at least one connection though -- both coaches attended Brown University.

"I understand Bill O'Brien has been named head coach and I want to congratulate him on his appointment," Paterno said in a statement to the Associated Press provided by his family. "I don't know Bill, but I respect his coaching record, and I am particularly pleased we share a connection to my alma mater, Brown."

"Despite recent commentary to the contrary, Penn State football has always been about more than winning," Paterno added, citing what he said was the program's commitment to education and community service. "I am hopeful this tradition will continue."

The Top Names for Pets in 2011 ? Simply Stated Blogs | Real Simple

As my friend would say, the cats have the headline this time. According to?Veterinary Pet Insurance Co (VPI)?and?Petfinder.com, a roundup of the most popular pet names in 2011 marked a real cat fight versus the same old routine for the dogs.

Petfinder.com reports that, of its 300,000+ adoptable pets, the top five dog names remained the same in 2011 (?Buddy,? ?Max,? ?Daisy,? ?Bella,? ?Lucy?), while cat names ?Smokey? and ?Charlie? climbed up to number 2 and 4, and ?Midnight? lost its footing and dropped from 2 to 10.

VPI?s review of its 485,000 pets also showed movement in the cat versus the dog kingdom. ?Bella? nimbly navigated into the top spot for cats with a lead of less than 10 (sound familiar?), unseating the 2010 winner, ?Max.? There was no new Alpha dog as ?Bella? guarded the top slot it?s held since 2009.

Bella, a VPI-insured Boston terrier, with the most popular name of the year.

VPI found that cat and dog lovers actually agreed on something: the beauty of the name ?Bella.? Perhaps this followed the lead of baby names as the U.S. Social Security Administration?s ranking of the five most popular baby names from 1911-2010 shows the name ?Isabella? once again in the lead for girls in 2010.?In fact, the?trend of naming pets with human names?continued in 2011, with a mere 13 dogs in the VPI database named ?Fido? and only 17 named ?Spot.? Six of the ten top cat names also were names one might give to a child, though traditionalists clung to their place in the top ten list with names like ?Tiger? and ?Tigger.?

But let?s get back to ?Bella.? The name?s popularity is chalked up to the?Twilight saga?and its star, Bella Swan. I would argue that there are other reasons, such as the pleasant sound of this Italian word (you say?your pet?s name out loud quite often, so it?s a good idea to choose a lovely name), not to mention its positive meaning.?(I find it amusing to think about the original meanings of names. ?Max,? which derives from ?Maximus,? means ?the greatest? ? does a parent hope this will become a self-fulfilling prophecy?)

Two dogs digging outside

Ahead of their time: Beau and Bella, 2002.

Some of the best pets? names I?ve heard of were suggested by children, so that?s another source to consider. My favorite example is a black and white and tan Havanese dog named ?Milkshake? ? brilliant!

Then there are the more farfetched names, which Petfinder.com handpicked from some 300 submissions by North American shelters and rescue groups. ?Examples: ?Barry Meow-nilow? and ?Brad the Pit.? (read the full list of wacky names, here)

You can have fun naming your pets. Just don?t forget to avoid names that sound indistinguishable from common commands such as ?sit? or ?no.?

Also use your pet?s name appropriately in order to avoid confusion. Dog trainer Martin Deeley?explains that you don?t want to call your pet?s name and reward them one time, then call your pet?s name and scold them another time. Best to use different commands to distinguish these scenarios from one another, such as ?Come!? in the first instance and ?No!? in the second.

Here are the top names for pets in 2011, as compiled separately by VPI and Petfinder.com:

(if you prefer, you can download the chart here)?

How about you? Have you met lots of ?Bellas? and ?Lucys?? How did you name your pets? And what?s the best name you?ve come across for a pet??
