A widow from Bradford on Avon in Wiltshire, who lost her husband to an asbestos related illness, is fighting a legal battle to win asbestos exposure compensation in the region of ?250,000.
Christine Hodge, 77, told This is Wiltshire that she is suing the Ministry of Defence due to the negligence that caused her husband?s illness, long term pain and suffering and eventually his death in June 2010.
Gerald Hodge worked as a shipwright and draughtsmen in Plymouth at the Devonport Dockyard. It was here that he was exposed to deadly asbestos fibres between 1947 and 1986. In 2000, Mr Hodge sued the Ministry of Defence and won asbestos exposure compensation of ?17,500 based on the assumption that his health would not deteriorate or develop certain specified conditions such as lung cancer.
This situation changed in May 2010 when Mr Hodge began to feel unwell, was coughing up blood and lost a lot of weight. Within weeks of doctors fearing he was suffering from lung cancer, Mr Hodge?s condition had drastically deteriorated and was unable to leave his home and required constant oxygen and care and attention in relation to washing and dressing.
The last illness before Mr Hodge lost his life, he was plagued by a bloody and persistent cough, developed bed sores and is said to have lost 3.6 years of his life because of cancer.
The asbestos exposure compensation will relate to his two years working on the refit of HMS Terrible between 1947 and 1949 and his subsequent work for the Admiralty at Bath, working on many ships afloat.
